Video : Nio EC6 electric car broke in half after a terrible accident in China.

On December 1, the online community and auto observers in Shanghai (China) were shocked by the scene of a serious traffic accident involving the Nio EC6 electric car. The collision was so strong that the rear of the electric SUV broke and completely separated from the body. Although the car's structure was severely damaged, the incident became a surprising testament to the ability to protect passengers and the safety of the battery system on this car line.

The accident occurred when the Nio EC6 was traveling at high speed, overtaking from the left and colliding with a car with a dash cam that was going in the same direction. This initial impact caused the driver to lose control, the car spun sideways and swerved to the right, crashing head-on into the hard median strip from the rear.

According to the preliminary technical report on the incident, the cause of the car's severe structural damage was due to the characteristics of the median strip. The upper edge of this concrete median strip was very narrow, only about 12 cm wide, acting as a giant blunt "blade". When colliding at high speed, the extremely large local pressure from the median strip severed the C-pillar and tore the rear floor of the car. The obvious consequence was that the rear of the car was bent and separated from the main cabin. However, it is worth noting that the passenger compartment still maintained the necessary integrity, creating a survival space for the occupants.

Immediately after the accident, the safety system of the Nio EC6 worked very effectively. The sensors immediately detected the collision and automatically unlocked the doors, and the hidden door handles automatically popped out, allowing the occupants to quickly escape or facilitate rescue work. The manufacturer Nio confirmed that the car was not using autonomous driving assistance technology at the time of the accident, ruling out the cause being a software error.

Another important bright spot that has attracted the attention of experts is the condition of the battery pack. Despite the extreme physical impact that caused the chassis to deform and break, the EC6's battery pack did not catch fire at all. On-site inspection showed no signs of thermal runaway or explosion, a constant concern for electric vehicle users in the event of an accident.

Nio staff quickly arrived at the scene after the car system sent an emergency notification. The two people in the car were taken to the hospital for medical examination. Fortunately, both suffered only minor injuries and were not life-threatening, a result considered miraculous compared to the severity of the accident scene.

The Nio EC6 involved in this incident is equipped with a full-time 4-wheel drive system with two electric motors, producing a combined output of up to 482 horsepower.

The Nio EC6 is a mid-size electric coupe-SUV produced by the Chinese automaker since 2020 and is highly appreciated for its design and performance. The latest 2025 version that crashed in this incident is equipped with a full-time 4-wheel drive system with two electric motors, producing a combined capacity of up to 482 horsepower. The car uses a 100 kWh battery pack, providing an impressive operating range of up to 630 km according to CLTC standards. This accident, although causing great property damage, accidentally became a harsh real-life test of the rigidity of the cockpit and the safety of the battery on new generation electric vehicles.
