According to Daily Mail , the explosion occurred at the Los Angeles Police Department's Biscailuz Training Academy at around 7:30 a.m. on July 18 (local time). Sources told KTLA that all three people killed were police officers.
Video footage of the incident shows a Los Angeles police car with a shattered rear windshield and a backpack can be seen on the ground nearby.
The explosion occurred at the site of a special law enforcement and explosives unit, including a bomb disposal squad. Sources told the LA Times that a bomb disposal squad was moving explosives when the explosion occurred.
Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Kathryn Barger said that while the exact cause of the explosion is still unknown, "all evidence suggests it was an accident."
The area has been temporarily evacuated while police deal with the incident.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on the X network that he had been briefed on the situation and had offered the state's "full support."
In a subsequent statement, US Attorney General Pam Bondi said she had spoken with Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna and deployed FBI and ATF agents to the scene to investigate the incident.
"Please pray for the entire Los Angeles Police Department," Bondi said.
