Accidents happen one after another

As a winding pass with 7 dangerous and winding locations, Bao Loc Pass (Lam Dong) has long been considered an area where serious traffic accidents frequently occur. On March 30, an accident occurred in this area, killing 1 person and injuring 3 others. According to information, at around 5:30 p.m., a passenger bus traveling from Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City suddenly collided with the rear of a truck traveling in the same direction in front, lost control, veered into the opposite lane and fell into a deep abyss about 20 meters.

Previously, another particularly serious traffic accident also occurred on National Highway 6 in the direction of Son La - Hanoi , killing 6 people and injuring 9 others. The incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. on February 21, when the passenger bus was traveling to Yen Chau district (Son La) and collided with a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction. It is known that this area is also a place with typical highland terrain and winding steep passes.

It can be seen that the two accident locations have in common the rugged terrain, many steep passes, continuous curves, limited visibility... These are also two of many mountain passes and roads in Vietnam with many "black spots" that pose a potential risk of traffic accidents. The continuous occurrence of serious accidents not only causes loss of life and property but also creates confusion and anxiety for drivers when traveling on these roads.

Clarify the cause to find a solution

According to experts, although mountain passes and mountain roads are often warned about their danger, traffic accidents still occur continuously due to many different reasons. Besides the causes related to infrastructure, many other objective reasons such as bad weather conditions, natural disasters, technical problems with vehicles such as flat tires, brake failure, loss of control... also contribute to increasing the risk of accidents.

In particular, the main cause of accidents in this area is also directly related to the driver. Through investigation by the authorities, many traffic accidents are caused by the driving skills and awareness of the driver. Typically, the recent passenger bus accidents on mountain passes and mountain roads are mostly related to speeding, reckless overtaking or subjective errors, not being able to control the situation of the driver.

Looking at serious traffic accidents that cause great damage to people and property, it shows that upgrading traffic infrastructure or investing in traffic safety works is very necessary, but not enough. More important is the awareness of law enforcement of the people, especially those who directly participate in traffic. Because, no matter how much the infrastructure is improved, if the drivers lack awareness, the risk of accidents will always be latent.

Therefore, to thoroughly handle traffic accident "black spots", there needs to be a synchronous and drastic participation from functional agencies, the political system, especially local authorities in propaganda, legal education, and strict handling of violations. Recently, it has been noticed that in the Bao Loc pass area, there have been many cases of passenger cars speeding, recklessly overtaking, causing accidents or endangering vehicles traveling through the pass. The Traffic Police Department of Lam Dong Provincial Police has established a working group to regularly patrol, control, and ensure traffic safety on Bao Loc pass. Since the beginning of 2025, for passenger transport vehicles alone, the authorities have detected and handled a total of 250 cases of violations of regulations when participating in traffic on Bao Loc pass.

In addition to awareness, one of the most important conditions to ensure traffic safety for drivers when traveling through mountain passes is to accumulate experience and improve vehicle control skills. Sharing with the media, Lieutenant Colonel Pham Viet Cong - Deputy Chief of the National Traffic Safety Office, said that vehicle control skills and situational judgment on steep mountain passes are very important. Therefore, to master speed, steering, and easily handle situations on the road, drivers need to follow the principle of "upshift, downshift", that is, keep the same low gear when going downhill. In particular, they must comply with regulations on speed, lanes, and avoid dangerous reckless overtaking.
