Mr Netanyahu's announcement came days after his main political rival, former Israeli army chief Benny Gantz, withdrew from Israel's war cabinet. Mr Gantz is widely seen as a more moderate voice.
Major Israeli war policies will now be approved only by Mr Netanyahu's security cabinet, which has taken a hard line and pushed for war, while opposing ceasefire proposals.

Why did Gantz join and then leave the war cabinet?
Israel's war cabinet was formed after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. At that time, Benny Gantz, a leader of the opposition party, joined Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in a show of solidarity.
At this point, Mr. Gantz demanded a decision-making body to direct the war, in order to limit the influence of far-right members of Mr. Netanyahu’s administration on the war. By early June, Mr. Gantz had left the cabinet after months of rising tensions over Israel’s strategy in Gaza.
Mr Gantz expressed frustration with the lack of progress in rescuing dozens of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He accused Mr Netanyahu of waging war to avoid new elections and a corruption trial. He called on Mr Netanyahu to come up with a clear strategy for Gaza after the conflict ends.
When Mr Netanyahu refused to accept the “ultimatum”, Mr Gantz announced his departure. He said that “fateful strategic decisions” in the cabinet “were met with hesitation and delay due to political considerations”.
How will Israel's wartime policy change?
Dissolving the war cabinet would distance Mr Netanyahu from politicians who have been more open to a ceasefire with Hamas.
Months of ceasefire talks have failed to find common ground between Hamas and Israeli leaders, with both sides reluctant to agree on a plan to free hostages, end the conflict and begin efforts to rebuild Gaza.
Prime Minister Netanyahu will now rely on members of his security cabinet, some of whom oppose the ceasefire agreements and have voiced support for retaking Gaza.
