“As soon as I started working and arrived at the Center, I was very surprised when the children greeted me in unison: Hello Mom,” shared Ms. Pham Thi Nhung, an officer of the Care and Management Department at Facility 1 of the Son La Province Social Protection Center. Having only been with the center for two months, the greetings of the children at the first meeting left a very special impression on her.
According to many people, family is an invisible thread that connects people with the same bloodline. But at this Center, I saw that thread woven not from blood, but from the love, care, and daily sharing of its members. The “mothers” are not the ones who carry the burden of giving birth, but they are the ones who take care of the children with every meal and sleep, the “fathers” are the ones who educate the children with all their hearts, and the “brothers and sisters” are friends in the same situation, helping each other to rise up in life.
Ms. Hoang Bich Thuy, Deputy Director of the Provincial Social Protection Center, shared: The Center is currently caring for and nurturing 104 subjects, including 95 children. We always strive to make the Center truly a big family, a warm home for the children. The staff in the Center always try to compensate for the children's disadvantages as much as possible. The children are also very affectionate, always close, and share everything with their fathers and mothers.
Not only nurturing and caring, the staff here also care about equipping the children with necessary life skills. Mr. Phung Duc Anh, from the Health and Nutrition Department, said: At the Center, I am not only a father, but also a teacher to the children. During the summer vacation, I also teach the children how to cook so that they can learn life skills and actively participate in common work responsibly.
In an environment with children of different ages, it is inevitable that there will be conflicts and disagreements. At that time, mothers are always the ones who mediate or take timely measures to educate and correct them. Chi Pham Thi Nhung shared: The children here are naturally obedient and gentle, but it is inevitable that they will quarrel. Each child has a different personality, the important thing is that you have to be flexible in the way you manage and teach, both gentle and strict so that the children understand and together build our common home.
Family affection is most clearly shown through the way the children interact and live together like siblings. At the Center, there are unfortunate children who have to use wheelchairs all their lives, but they are not alone, because the friends around them have become the hands to comfort them, the legs for them to walk in life. The image of Dau Thao Nguyen diligently feeding her paralyzed friend spoonfuls of porridge makes me fully feel the two words "protection" in this shelter. When asked if she had any difficulties taking care of her friend, she just smiled shyly: "I have been helping younger children for a long time, so I am used to it. Besides me, many other brothers and sisters also help take care of the children at the Center like sisters in the family."
Paying attention to the health and safety of the children, since the beginning of the year, the Center has coordinated with Military Hospital 106 to organize the first periodic health check-up; disinfected the entire Center 6 times at 2 facilities. Organized 14 propaganda sessions on measures to prevent and control epidemics and conducted 2 propaganda sessions for children on life skills "Preventing and preventing drowning".
As both parents and teachers, the staff at the Center are very interested in the children's learning, creating the best conditions for them to go to school "not inferior to their friends". During the summer vacation, the children still regularly maintain self-study and reading sessions in the classroom, with the help of their parents. Mr. Phung Duc Anh added: We always remind the children to study hard, gain knowledge so that they can confidently enter life later. In addition to the parents' teaching, the older children will help take care of and advise the younger children.
Not disappointing their "parents", in the 2024-2025 school year, the rate of students passing the next grade reached 97.6%; students participating in the 2024-2025 excellent student selection exam achieved good results, including 1 city-level encouragement prize; 1 first prize and 1 second prize at the school level; 100% of students achieved good and fair conduct. The center closely coordinated with schools and vocational training facilities to monitor and grasp the learning situation to advise on choosing the right orientation. As a result, 8 students participated in the 10th grade entrance exam and 5 students registered for vocational training.
Family affection at the Center is present in every action and gesture that members show to each other. That affection has brought together incomplete lives into a big family, giving wings to the dreams of less fortunate children about a better life in the future.
