Successfully reconnected the girl's severed popliteal artery

On September 21, Ba Ria Hospital (Ba Ria-Vung Tau) announced that doctors from the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology had successfully operated and reconnected the popliteal artery of a female patient who had been severed in a traffic accident. Doctor CK1 Phan Van Tu (Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Ba Ria Hospital) was the one who directly performed this surgery.

The patient is Ms. TTNQ (23 years old, from Ninh Thuan). On the evening of September 12, Ms. Q. was driving a motorbike on the road in Binh Chau commune (Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau) when she had a traffic accident.

The accident caused Ms. Q. to break the upper third of both bones in her right leg. The broken bone pierced the popliteal artery, severing it and the anterior tibial artery bundle.

This is a very complicated injury. If not treated promptly, it will lead to leg necrosis and loss of motor function.

Dr. Phan Van Tu was called to the hospital that night to perform surgery on the patient with his team. Dr. Tu said that because the patient had severed both the popliteal artery and the anterior tibial artery bundle, great care had to be taken when reconnecting these arteries.

"We took two segments of the saphenous vein from the left leg. One segment was grafted to the popliteal artery and the other to the anterior tibial artery. The surgery lasted from 11pm on September 12 to 4:30am the next day and was successful. Currently, the patient's right leg's motor functions are completely normal," said Dr. Tu. According to Dr. Tu, in a week, the patient will have the skin sutured a second time and be discharged from the hospital.

Recently, Ba Ria Hospital has successfully performed surgery on many patients with complex popliteal artery rupture.
