DB18 for higher productivity than expected

Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh - Director of Quang Nam Central Seed Joint Stock Company said that in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, the Da Nang City Center for Agricultural and Forestry Extension coordinated with Hoa Phong 2 Agricultural Production Service Cooperative to deploy a demonstration model of high-yield, high-quality purebred rice variety DB18 of Quang Nam Central Seed Joint Stock Company (belonging to Vietnam Seed Group - Vinaseed Group).
In addition, Hoa Phong 2 Agricultural Production Service Cooperative has also put into mass production the VNR10 rice variety and trial production of the VNR20 rice variety. Through field experience, Vinaseed's rice varieties have shown superior results in terms of yield and resistance compared to many other rice varieties currently produced locally.

DB18 has a growing period of 105-110 days in the winter-spring crop and 93-96 days in the summer-autumn crop. It is widely adaptable and can be grown on many different types of soil. It has a large number of grains per panicle, a high percentage of solid grains, an average yield of 70-80 quintals/ha, good rice quality, clear white grains, no chalkiness, and a milling rate of 70%.
Mr. Nguyen Chau - Director of Hoa Phong 2 Agricultural Production Service Cooperative excitedly said: "This is the second crop that the cooperative has demonstrated the DB18 rice variety with an area of 2 hectares, with 30 households participating in cultivation. Farmers are trained in the correct seed soaking techniques, and fertilizing with the correct dosage for each growth and development period of the rice plant.

As a result, farmers are very satisfied with the DB18 rice variety, because the care process requires little effort, and no pests or diseases have been found, so it is very cost-effective in terms of fertilizer, pesticides and labor. Although the soil in this area is only average, the DB18 rice variety still grows healthily, standing firm against the stormy and windy weather at the end of the season."

With the advantages of low plant growth and good lodging resistance of the DB18 rice variety, farmers hope that next season the cooperative will continue to cooperate with Vinaseed Company to expand the planting area, to evaluate the effectiveness and possibly move towards large-scale production, improving income.
Resistant to harsh weather, few pests
The 2024 summer-autumn crop is the first time that Hoa Phong 2 Agricultural Production Service Cooperative has put into mass production the VR10 rice variety of Vinaseed Group. This is a promising rice variety of Vinaseed with many outstanding advantages, high yield, and can be grown in both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops. VNR10 has a growing period of 105-110 days in the winter-spring crop and 93-97 days in the summer-autumn crop.

Mr. Chau shared that the cooperative is currently cultivating 90 hectares of VNR10 rice variety, with an estimated harvest yield of 7 tons/ha, exceeding farmers' expectations. From sowing to ripening, there are very few pests and diseases, and the care process is less difficult than with other varieties, and the ripe rice grains have a beautiful golden color.

Although the rice fields cultivated with VNR10 variety have the disadvantage of poor drainage compared to other places, which can easily cause the rice plants to fall, but through the cultivation process, the rice fields with VNR10 variety are still strong, heavy with seeds, and give high yield. Especially when the rice is ripening, there are many storms and whirlwinds but the plants do not fall, they are steady in the rain and wind, this makes farmers very satisfied and confident in production.
Mr. Le Van Toan - Head of Sales and Product Development Department, Quang Nam Central Seed Joint Stock Company said: "With the advantage of concentrated panicle emergence, VNR10 rice variety is less affected by adverse weather conditions, with a very high rate of solid grains per panicle. Therefore, this rice variety has a high yield, estimated at 70-75 quintals/ha in the summer-autumn crop, and an average of 80-85 quintals/ha in the winter-spring crop.

In addition, the high-yield, high-quality purebred rice variety VNR10 is a short, hard-stemmed variety that is very resistant to lodging. The plants are large and even, the flag leaves are flat, the tillering is concentrated, the clumps are compact, and it is drought-resistant and heat-resistant, so it is suitable for planting in both seasons.
As for the VNR20 rice variety, this is the main structural variety in the winter-spring crop in Da Nang in recent years. This summer-autumn crop, the company wanted to test it to evaluate its adaptability in the summer-autumn crop and the results were beyond expectations, the VNR20 rice variety showed good heat resistance, pest resistance and lodging resistance. Farmers are very satisfied with its high yield and good quality.

VNR20 is a temperate rice variety that can be grown in both winter-spring and summer-autumn crops. VNR20 tillers strongly, in a concentrated manner, and has compact clumps. The plants are short, so they are resistant to lodging and resistant to some pests and diseases, so the yield is also superior.
VNR20 has a summer-autumn growing period of 96-98 days, the leaves are strong and upright so it is less susceptible to dew condensation causing fungus, easy to cultivate, the rice stalks are hard so they do not fall over, the grains are very firm, the rice grains are white and clear, not chalky, the rice is white, shiny, soft, rich in flavor, and delicious.
