Nghe An farmers must harvest young corn to sell after floods

Việt NamViệt Nam05/10/2023

When the sun rises and the fields are drained of water, it is also the time when the fallen corn begins to dry up. To recover some costs, these days, Dien Hung farmers are focusing on harvesting corn. The whole commune has more than 200 hectares of winter corn that was planted early and is ready for harvest, but 50 hectares have fallen and must be harvested early.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu from Ngoc My village said: “My family planted 4 sao of corn, but nearly 2 sao were lost due to wind and rain. Last year, the harvest was worth nearly 2 million VND/sao, but now it is only 500,000 VND/sao. The remaining area also needs to be treated with ash fertilizer to be harvested. In general, farmers suffered a lot of losses in this winter corn crop.”

Ms. Tran Thi Lan, a farmer in Dien Hoang commune, said: "I sowed corn early, and now it's almost time to harvest. They buy it very cheaply. I have corn at home, so I use a tractor to crush it and make green manure."

Corn is the main crop, accounting for nearly 1/3 of the winter crop area in Dien Chau district with more than 1,000 hectares, mainly on fertile land. In recent years, people have prioritized developing biomass corn and linking up to supply to dairy companies. During the recent heavy rains, about 300 hectares of winter corn in Dien Chau district were flooded and collapsed beyond repair.

Therefore, farmers are forced to cut the corn young to sell, to recover some costs. However, due to the dry corn, the yield decreased, along with that, livestock companies bought at very low prices, only half compared to previous years. According to farmers' calculations, each sao of corn after the flood only brought in 500,000 - 600,000 VND, while the cost of each sao of winter corn was about 1,000,000 VND, not to mention the labor of plowing, sowing, harvesting...

Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district said: According to statistics, the recent heavy rain has affected and damaged 1,025 hectares of winter crop. Of which, the area of corn and peanuts is 837 hectares, 134 hectares of vegetables and 54 hectares of aquaculture. The most damaged is corn because this is the time when the plant develops heavy corn, so it is very easy to break and cannot recover. We have currently conducted statistics on the damage caused by the recent heavy rain, and proposed to the People's Committee of the district as well as the province to provide some support to farmers./.
