As the year draws to a close, the agricultural sector in Can Tho City is proactively organizing production and preparing a plentiful and diverse supply of agricultural products, ensuring quality and food safety to meet consumer demand during the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026.

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, the atmosphere of production in the fields, orchards, and livestock farms of Can Tho City has become more urgent than ever. From planting, caring for, harvesting to processing and packaging, everything is geared towards ensuring a stable supply of high-quality goods for the Tet market.

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Can Tho City, the city has planted approximately 247,107 hectares of rice during the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop season, reaching 85% of the plan. It is expected that by the peak Tet holiday season, the harvested rice area will reach approximately 80,000 hectares, with an average yield of 72 quintals/hectare, supplying the market with about 600,000 tons of commercial rice, contributing to stabilizing the rice supply for consumption and processing.

Along with rice, fruit trees continue to play an important role in the city's agricultural production structure. Currently, Can Tho has over 100,000 hectares of fruit trees, including many specialty varieties such as pomelo, mango, longan, sapodilla, durian, and jackfruit, which are entering the fruiting stage to serve the Tet holiday. It is expected that the area of fruit trees ready for harvest during Tet will reach approximately 3,500 hectares, with an estimated yield of over 50,000 tons.

In the vegetable sector, the city has planted over 25,800 hectares, higher than the same period last year. Specifically for vegetables for Tet (Lunar New Year), the harvested area is approximately 2,500 hectares with many varieties such as watermelons, cucumbers, cabbage, pickled mustard greens, bitter melon, straw mushrooms, etc. Of these, watermelons account for about 1,000 hectares, with an estimated yield of 18,000 tons, ready to meet the increased consumption demand during Tet.

Sharing about the preparation of supply sources, Mr. Nguyen Son Ha, Director of Long Tuyen Safe Vegetable Cooperative, Long Tuyen Ward, Can Tho City, said: "From the middle of the year, the cooperative has developed a separate production plan for the Tet market, arranged a staggered planting schedule, and strengthened the application of safe techniques to ensure yield and quality. This year, the cooperative's vegetable production is expected to increase by about 10-15% compared to last year, enough to supply wholesale markets and supermarkets in the city."

Besides vegetables, fruit growers are also busy preparing for the Tet holiday. In My Khanh commune, Mr. Le Van Tam, a long-time grower of green pomelos, said that his family has proactively managed flowering, fruit bagging, and meticulous care to ensure high-quality pomelos with attractive appearance.

Mr. Tam said: "Every Tet holiday, my family applies techniques and bags the fruit to ensure the pomelos ripen fully during Tet, resulting in round, evenly shaped fruits with glossy green skins that always sell for a higher price than usual. Although the weather is quite favorable this year, if the price remains stable, the pomelo growers will be very happy."

In the livestock sector, the total number of cattle and poultry in the city currently stands at over 16.6 million, equivalent to the same period last year. It is expected that during the Tet holiday, Can Tho will supply approximately 15,000 tons of various types of meat and nearly 67 million poultry eggs, ensuring that the increased consumer demand of the people is met.

The fisheries sector also contributes a significant supply of goods to the year-end market. With a farming area of over 12,500 hectares, the expected seafood production for the Tet holiday is approximately 29,600 tons, including brackish water shrimp, catfish, tilapia, snakehead fish, and many other specialty seafood products.

Besides fresh produce, Can Tho's processed and OCOP (One Commune One Product) products are becoming increasingly diverse. The city currently has 895 certified OCOP products, many of which meet food safety standards and have clear traceability. For this year's Tet holiday, the city expects to supply approximately 7,100 tons of processed products to the market, serving the gifting and consumption needs of the people.

Mr. Ngo Thai Chan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said: The agricultural sector has proactively developed plans for agricultural production and supply since the beginning of the year, while strengthening quality control and food safety. With the current production scale, Can Tho is capable of supplying agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products to serve the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, contributing to market and price stability.

Alongside production, the agricultural sector, in close coordination with relevant departments and agencies, is also implementing comprehensive measures to ensure food safety and environmental hygiene before, during, and after Tet, aiming to provide people with a safe, abundant, and fulfilling spring season.
