Agricultural products for Tet (Lunar New Year): Prices fluctuate depending on the item.

(DTO) In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, the atmosphere of harvesting and trading agricultural products in fruit-growing regions becomes bustling. This year's agricultural market for Tet (Lunar New Year) shows many positive signs, with some key products experiencing price increases compared to the same period last year and stable purchasing power.

However, alongside the joy of good prices, farmers also face many difficulties due to the impact of unfavorable weather conditions in recent times, causing a significant decrease in the yield of some types of fruit.

Hoa Loc sand mangoes are priced higher than the same period last year.

Hoa Loc Cat Mangoes Are In Scarce, Prices Rise Sharply

According to observations in the Hoa Loc mango growing regions, the price of mangoes purchased by traders at the orchards ranges from 95,000 to 100,000 VND/kg, depending on the type and quality of the fruit. This price is significantly higher than the same period last year (the price was around 80,000 - 90,000 VND/kg), bringing considerable profits to the farmers.

However, the joy of high prices is accompanied by worries about insufficient yields. Many farmers say that this year, although the mangoes bloomed at the right time, they were hit by unseasonal rains at the end of the year, seriously affecting the fruit setting process. Widespread flower and young fruit drop has occurred, causing a significant decrease in yield compared to expectations.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, a long-time mango farmer, shared that despite proactively applying technical measures to induce off-season flowering, bagging fruits, and preventing pests and diseases, weather conditions remain a major obstacle. Heavy rains during the flowering period reduce fruit set rates. Some orchards have seen yields this year drop to only half of last year's.

Due to limited supply, traders have to go directly to the orchards to place orders early, even accepting higher prices to secure goods for the Tet market. Even so, many traders still cannot purchase enough to meet demand. This shows that the consumption of Hoa Loc mangoes during this year's Tet season is quite strong, while the supply is scarce.

According to mango growers, if the weather were more favorable, the current price would bring very good income. However, in reality, due to reduced production, profits have not increased proportionally with the selling price. Nevertheless, in the context of rising agricultural input costs, the current mango price is still considered a positive sign for growers.

PINEAPPLE PRICES REMAIN STABLE, FARMERS ARE HAPPY

Unlike mangoes, pineapples have maintained stability in both production and price during this year's Tet holiday. Currently, traders are buying pineapples at around 8,000 VND/kg, a slight increase of 500-1,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. For pineapples sold individually, the price is commonly between 10,000 and 12,000 VND per fruit, depending on size and quality.

According to pineapple farmers, this year's weather has been generally more favorable compared to other fruit crops. Thanks to proactively managing planting schedules and applying advanced techniques in cultivation, many households have achieved relatively high yields, with uniformly sized, attractive fruits, meeting market demands well.

Pineapple demand during the Lunar New Year is considered stable. Besides fresh consumption, pineapples are also purchased by businesses for processing into juices and jams, helping to prevent sharp price drops like in previous years. At current prices, after deducting costs, pineapple growers are making a profit, creating a positive atmosphere for the year-end harvest.

Some farmers said that although pineapple prices haven't increased dramatically, the good news is that they've had a good harvest, good prices, and stable demand. This is an important factor that helps them feel secure in maintaining and expanding their cultivation area in the future.

The price of pomelo fluctuates depending on the time of year.

Grapefruit prices fluctuate depending on the time of year.

For pomelos, the market this Tet holiday has seen quite significant fluctuations. According to orchard owners, at the beginning of the twelfth lunar month, the price of green-skinned pomelos at the orchards ranged from about 32,000 VND/kg. However, by the middle of the twelfth lunar month, the price dropped to 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, depending on the type, size, and appearance.

The reason is believed to be the rapid increase in pomelo supply as many orchards enter their peak harvest season. Meanwhile, the consumer market has become more selective, especially for pomelos intended for Tet (Lunar New Year), requiring fruit that is round, beautiful, with bright, blemish-free skin. High-quality pomelos still fetch good prices, while average-quality pomelos sell more slowly.

Although prices have decreased compared to the beginning of the season, overall, current prices still ensure profitability for growers. Many farmers are proactively staggering their harvests, choosing appropriate selling times to minimize risks from market fluctuations.

PROACTIVELY ADAPT AND ENHANCE THE VALUE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

To proactively ensure a safe supply of agricultural products for the Tet holiday market, cooperatives and concentrated production areas are playing a key role in linking consumption.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Director of Vinh Kim Cooperative, said that the cooperative currently has about 60 hectares of fruit trees certified VietGAP, with key fruits such as: star apple, mango, pomelo, dragon fruit and some other fruit trees.

Producing according to VietGAP standards helps the cooperative tightly control the cultivation process, ensuring food safety and meeting the increasingly high demands of the market, especially during the Lunar New Year.

According to Mr. Son, the total output of VietGAP-certified fruits expected to supply the market for the Lunar New Year of 2026 is approximately 500 tons.

This output is mainly consumed through businesses and long-term partners affiliated with the cooperative, supplying wholesale markets, supermarket chains, and safe agricultural product stores inside and outside the province; at the same time, a portion is consumed through the cooperative's direct sales channel, contributing to diversifying output and increasing product value.

Specifically, the main fruit crops of Vinh Kim Cooperative for this year's Tet season include: star apple with an area of about 5 hectares, estimated yield of 50 tons; mango with an area of about 10 hectares, yield of about 50 tons; pomelo with an area of about 25 hectares, estimated yield of 100 tons; and dragon fruit and other fruit trees accounting for a large share of the production, about 300 tons.

The total expected output for the market is approximately 500 tons, ensuring consistent quality and attractive designs to meet the consumer demand and the needs of people celebrating Tet (Lunar New Year).

Assessing the production and market situation, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son said that, compared to 2025, the yield of fruits for Tet this year is generally stable, with some types showing a slight increase, thanks to relatively favorable weather conditions and the strict adherence of farmers to VietGAP technical procedures.

Regarding prices, fruit prices are expected to be similar to or slightly higher than last year, especially for fruits that meet safety and high-quality standards. This will contribute to increasing the income of cooperative members and create motivation for people to continue engaging in clean and sustainable agricultural production.

Overall, the reality of the agricultural market during this year's Tet holiday shows that weather conditions remain a major challenge for agricultural production. In the context of complex climate change, proactively adapting, applying science and technology, and linking production along the value chain are necessary approaches to improve efficiency and reduce risks for farmers.

In addition, building brands, improving quality, and ensuring food safety and hygiene also contribute to helping local agricultural products maintain their position in the market, especially during peak consumption periods such as the Lunar New Year.

Despite numerous challenges, positive signals from the mango, pineapple, and pomelo markets indicate that agricultural products continue to play an important role in rural economic development.

With the support of relevant authorities and the proactive efforts of farmers, it is expected that local agricultural products will continue to affirm their value, bringing stable and sustainable income to farmers in the future.
