Songkhla, one of the three provinces originally earmarked to host the 2025 SEA Games, has suffered one of its worst floods in years. The Games were scheduled to officially open on December 9, with Songkhla originally earmarked to host chess, kabaddi, men's football (Group B), judo, karate, wrestling, pencak silat, wushu, muay and petanque.
Vath Chamrouen, secretary general of the Cambodian Olympic Committee, signed a letter informing the Thai organizing committee that the country would withdraw eight sports - judo, karate, pencak silat, wrestling, wushu, petanque, football and sepak takraw. Cambodia said: "The adjustment was made due to significant security concerns, which pose challenges in ensuring the safety and protection of our athletes and officials."
However, Cambodia will still participate in swimming, athletics, e-sports, fencing, gymnastics, jiujitsu, kickboxing, taekwondo, horse riding, jet skiing, teqball, triathlon and volleyball.
The Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) executive board stressed that all events scheduled to take place in the province were moved to Bangkok.
As the host country, Thailand will also have to consider how to compensate member countries who have booked flights and accommodation in Songkhla. Discussions will be held to find a solution that benefits all parties involved, Thailand said.
