As part of the innovation flow of performing arts, circus arts – which relies heavily on skill and direct interaction with the audience – is facing the need to change to keep up with modern tastes.
At the opening ceremony of the Star Theater, People's Artist Tong Toan Thang - Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation recognized that applying technology to circus is an "inevitable development step", especially in the context of the public increasingly favoring multi-layered, visual experiences.

According to Mr. Thang, the application of technology is not intended to replace, but to supplement circus, creating more vivid performance spaces. “A dance performance about Vietnamese countryside, if adding images of communal houses and village gates recreated using 3D mapping technology, will increase the aesthetics and emotional depth for the audience ,” he said.
However, he also frankly admitted that technology is not a “magic wand” that can save everything. When bringing technology to the stage, artists must practice more, interacting synchronously with sound, images, and rhythm to ensure coordination and safety.
“Instead of focusing solely on pure technique, artists now also have to combine it with technology, requiring double the effort ,” People's Artist Tong Toan Thang shared.

Incorporating technology into circus is much more complex than regular performance.
Citing an international example, he mentioned Cirque du Soleil - the world- famous circus - which took two years to build a show that integrated technology, showing the level of complexity and investment required for a modern performance model.
The return of the Star Theater with a new look is also seen by him as an opportunity to restart projects that have been remembered by audiences, typically the show IONAH - a play that created a buzz thanks to the combination of circus, contemporary dance and projection technology that he directed.
Although IONAH has stopped operating, People's Artist Tong Toan Thang hopes that a new version will be developed, keeping the old spirit but enhancing the entertainment factor, aiming to serve tourism and international audiences.

Modern performance technology is becoming a big challenge for public theaters.
From the perspective of drama, Meritorious Artist Kieu Minh Hieu - Acting Director of the Vietnam Drama Theater - said that modern performance technology is becoming a big challenge for public theaters that have not yet invested properly in facilities.
“ Most state-owned theaters only have stages with basic designs. Meanwhile, private units are investing in projection technology, which is a positive signal for the development of the cultural industry,” he said.
Although it is expected to open up a new direction for the stage, especially circus – an art form that has suffered many disadvantages in terms of investment and audience – the application of modern technology needs to be carefully considered, avoiding the trend of “decoration” that lacks artistic depth. What remains is still a good script, quality performance and resonance between artists and audiences – the core elements for the stage to exist in the hearts of the public.
