Female teacher pioneers in applying technology to history lessons

Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen, born in 1983, is currently a History teacher at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong City. Along with her professional duties of leading the school team to compete in national competitions for excellent students and teaching History to non-specialized classes, Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen diligently researches and has many initiatives to apply information technology in teaching, which are enthusiastically received by the school's students and colleagues from many provinces and cities.

History brought to life with the help of technology

The class taught by teacher Nguyen Thu Quyen always has an exciting and vibrant atmosphere. Historical milestones and iconic structures of a time become familiar and attractive to students thanks to technology. With the guidance of teacher Quyen, students are the ones who directly create 3D images and explain about prominent historical sites such as Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Hue Ancient Capital... For other lessons, teacher Quyen has used technology, including artificial intelligence AI to create lively Q&A sessions or write songs about international events. From the attractive lectures, students not only easily remember and memorize history, but they also follow the teacher's good example in studying and training themselves.

Student Mac Phuong Dong, a 12th grade Chemistry student at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, said that every lecture by Ms. Nguyen Thu Quyen is lively and engaging. She always keeps up with technological trends, including using AI to compose songs related to events. For example, when studying a lesson about the United Nations, she used AI to compose a song about solidarity and friendship between countries, thereby helping students get excited about the lecture and easily absorb knowledge.

Dang Vu Ha Phuong, a History 11 student at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, said that after a year of being guided by Ms. Quyen to review for the subject, she has a good method to master history knowledge and has become an excellent student. She is currently reviewing for the national excellent student exam with her History 12 classmates. Not only does she accompany students in class, she also always listens and supports students at all times.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thanh, Vice Principal of Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, shared that Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen is a core teacher of the school in the field of key education , discovering and nurturing talented students. She always researches and creates the best methods and motivates students in the learning process. Therefore, the process of nurturing talented students by Dr. Quyen has achieved many achievements. Ms. Quyen has also passed on her passion for history to generations of students, helping them to cultivate virtue and train their talents.

In the period of 2020-2025 alone, Ms. Nguyen Thu Quyen directly trained 71 students to win prizes at all levels, of which 13 students won the National Excellent Student Award with 5 Second Prizes, 4 Third Prizes and 4 Encouragement Prizes. Regarding research and guidance for students to apply scientific achievements during this period, Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen achieved outstanding results with 7 valuable initiatives, widely applied, directly serving the teaching of History and the work of homeroom teachers.

One of the typical initiatives is "Developing cooperation capacity for high school students in teaching Vietnamese history (10th century - mid-19th century)". When applying the initiative in class, students develop cooperation capacity, promote strengths, overcome weaknesses of each student. Knowledge and experience shared with each other help students to complete assigned tasks well. The initiative also contributes to developing cooperation capacity for students in teaching history, helping to overcome boredom in learning. Students together search and exploit information to save study time, be more active in understanding problems, increase learning motivation, avoid passive habits, and rely on others. Teachers have less trouble in class, and are more convenient in the process of testing and evaluating students. This initiative has been effectively applied at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted and has been applied by 5 more educational institutions in both the South and the North.

Continuing the story of the beauty of knowledge in the digital age

Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen was born and raised in Thanh Mien commune, Hai Phong city. In the 1997-1998 school year, student Nguyen Thu Quyen, Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, Hai Duong, won second prize in the national history competition and was admitted directly to Hanoi National University of Education.

After graduating from university, student Nguyen Thu Quyen returned to her hometown and became a History teacher at the specialized school she had attended. During her teaching career at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, with her own efforts, the encouragement of the school's Board of Directors, the trust and support of her family, teacher Nguyen Thu Quyen devoted all her energy to researching and teaching History, while completing her Master's and Doctoral degrees. The entire process of immersing herself in history was aimed at helping students understand the stories of people and countries, with their choices, aspirations and timeless lessons.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen, learning history is not just about memorizing events but also about learning how to reflect on why things happened and how people changed the world. For students to be good at history, they need to understand the essence instead of memorizing, and at the same time have connections with reality. Above all, students need to have critical thinking, retell the story in their own way to answer the question of why the past created today, from which they will understand what each individual needs to do for the future.

To make learning interesting and engaging, Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen continuously applies information technology, using modern technology platforms such as Kahoot, Prezi, 3D virtual museums, VR, AR technology, and AI applications in history lectures. Not only helping students absorb lessons well, Ms. Quyen also guides them to apply technology to confidently design library models. With this project, she and her students asked for sponsorship from the British University Vietnam (BUV) to print books, organize reading competitions, and donate 5 outdoor libraries and 5 corridor libraries to 2 high schools and 3 primary schools in Hai Duong city (old).

With her contributions, Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen received many awards and commendations, including a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister with the title of National Emulation Fighter in 2025. She is also a typical individual of Hai Phong attending the 11th National Patriotic Emulation Congress held next December.

One of the most special “certificates” for teacher Quyen is the Doctorate of Historical Sciences. According to Dr. Nguyen Thu Quyen, 5 years of working on her doctoral thesis was not only an academic journey but also a journey to overcome herself. During this journey, she received a lot of support from Hai Duong province at that time, the school, her family and especially the guidance in scientific research of the late Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Quang Hien, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
