"Mom, I passed the university entrance exam!"

The gate opened, in front of me was a girl with white skin, a high nose bridge, her hands holding the wall, moving with difficulty, step by step forward. She was Le Thi Lien (born 2005), Trung Tay village, Hoang Phu commune, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa . Lien was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

After graduating and completing admission procedures, Lien returned home to visit and prepare more personal belongings, pots, pans, bowls, chopsticks, etc. to start student life.

Still feeling happy when she knew she passed the university entrance exam, Lien said, after seeing the admission score, she was overwhelmed with emotion.

"I called out, 'Mom, I passed the university entrance exam!', and my mom ran upstairs and hugged me. We were both happy and sad. That day, I stayed up all night texting and chatting with my relatives, teachers, and friends. While texting, I cried. I cried because I was so surprised and happy that the school accepted a disabled person like me," Lien confided.

Lien is a disabled but very strong girl, she used to study at the Vocational Education - ContinuingEducation Center of Hoang Hoa district. Not satisfied with her fate, Lien tried hard to rise up.

Lien is a good student. In grade 12, she participated in the provincial math competition and won an encouragement prize. Although she has a severe motor disability and is eligible for special high school graduation, she is still determined to take the exam. With 21.65 points in block A00, Lien was admitted to Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

For the past 18 years, Lien's health has been weak, her feet are cramped, she can only walk 20m by herself, to move further she has to hold onto walls, railings... Her right hand cannot hold anything heavy, she writes and does everything with her left hand.

The new Pharmacy student said that at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Lien is the only disabled person.

"On the first day I entered the university gate, many eyes were on me. Some people whispered and gossiped, but I didn't feel sad or self-conscious because I was used to it," Lien shared.

At the new school, Lien had difficulty moving around. For convenience, her parents rented a house near the school and asked her aunt to live with them and take care of her.

Every day Lien goes to school by motorbike and is led to class by her aunt or classmates.

Sharing about her dream, Lien said that since she was little, she was treated by doctors and the image of the "white-blouse warrior" was always in her mind, nurturing her dream.

18-year journey of overcoming oneself

Lien is the second child in a family of three children. Unlike her sisters, Lien was born in the 7th month of pregnancy. She had to stay in an incubator in the hospital for 15 days.

Ms. Trinh Thi Thao (49 years old, Lien's mother) said that the time the hospital said Lien had Down syndrome, she was confused and worried. The doctor suggested a method to improve her child's condition by listening to classical music, so Ms. Thao bought hundreds of tapes and discs to play for her child to listen to.

After a while, seeing that her child's brain was developing normally, appropriate for her age, Mrs. Thao breathed a sigh of relief. However, when Lien was 3 years old, she just sat in one place and could not walk, so her family took her to the doctor, who diagnosed her with spastic cerebral palsy.

"The first time in my life I heard the name of such a strange disease, I was shocked, my limbs went limp," Ms. Thao recalled the painful moment of her life.

After many surgeries, Lien's legs are still cramped (Photo: Hanh Linh).

Her child was sick and her husband was working far from home, so Mrs. Thao took advantage of the time and place to teach her child. When summer came, the mother and child traveled dozens of kilometers to a rehabilitation center in Thanh Hoa city.

The couple's salary as teachers and soldiers at that time was not enough to pay for medicine, acupuncture, orthopedics, and treatment for Lien. But whenever someone told her about herbal medicine or food that was good for her child's health, Mrs. Thao would try to buy it.

Unable to bear seeing her child's arms and legs convulsing, Mrs. Thao's family ran around and arranged for surgery. After 5 surgeries, Lien still cannot hold a pen, stand up, walk, or do personal hygiene.

"There were times when I was tired but I never thought of giving up on my child. As a teacher, I tried every way to improve her situation. At the age of 7, Lien knew how to write her name," said Ms. Thao.

Mrs. Thao said that the moment when her child looked at his friends playing with longing eyes was the moment she felt the most pain and love for him.

Wanting to be like her friends, Lien held onto the wall and practiced diligently. There were days when she fell down, her knees bled, her legs were swollen and painful, but she did not "give up". God did not let her down, at the age of 10, Lien could walk, even if it was just 3 or 4 steps.

"Mom, I can walk now!" Lien said loudly as if she wanted to inform everyone about her efforts. At that time, I cried and called her father to inform him," said Mrs. Thao.

Back to the present, Mrs. Thao shared that sending her child to school was to help him learn to read and write and calculate, not to think that he would make an effort to change his fate. Many people said that if her child was disabled, why would he go to university, but she still decided to take the exam and get into her dream school.

"Over the past 18 years, there have been 3 moments when my child called out "Mom" the loudest: when he was 7 years old and learned to write, when he was 10 years old and learned to walk, and when he was 18 years old and passed the university entrance exam," Ms. Thao said emotionally.
