A female student specializing in Mathematics wins a national award in History and chooses to study economics.

Hoang Cao An Nga, a former math student in Cao Bang, "changed direction" to history and subsequently won a national award for excellence in the subject.

Hoang Cao An Nga is currently a first-year student at the National Economics University. Born and raised in Cao Bang, Nga quickly realized that without diligent study and building a strong foundation of knowledge, her career opportunities and future development would be extremely limited.

"If I want to succeed, I think the only way is through studying," Nga shared.

The greatest blessing, according to the student, is having parents who always respect their children and don't impose their will on them. Both allow Nga to make choices and take responsibility for her decisions. This trust has given Nga the confidence to navigate important crossroads.

From first grade to ninth grade, An Nga consistently achieved high scores in mathematics competitions for gifted students. Afterward, she was admitted to the specialized mathematics class at Cao Bang High School for Gifted Students. It seemed Nga's academic path would be entirely dedicated to mathematics, but a chance encounter opened up a new direction for her.

Despite being in a specialized math class, Nga had a homeroom teacher who also taught history. Her engaging and emotionally rich lectures gradually ignited a passion for the subject in the young girl.

The moment Nga realized she could go far with History was when her homeroom teacher encouraged her to try out for the gifted student selection team.

"Before that, I never thought I would be 'suited' to this subject because throughout my years studying Math, I was more familiar with logical thinking and numbers than with writing," Nga recalled. The female student feared she wouldn't be able to keep up with her classmates who were more into the social sciences, and that it would be difficult for her to transform her naturally dry writing style into something more fluid.

However, it was precisely her strong mathematical background that proved to be an advantage for Russia. The female student applied logical thinking to systematize historical knowledge in chronological order, focusing on events, causes, and effects. In analyzing historical events, her mathematical logic also helped her to analyze questions rigorously and accurately.

Thanks to that learning method, in 11th grade, An Nga won second prize in the provincial-level excellent student competition. "This achievement made me believe that I could go far in History," Nga said. In 12th grade, Nga continued to win third prize at the provincial level and second prize at the national-level excellent student competition.

"The more I study History and learn about our nation's past, the more I enjoy it. This subject has helped me understand who I am and where I stand," Nga shared.

With second prize in the national excellent student competition, An Nga was eligible for direct admission to many universities. However, the female student decided to choose the E-commerce major at the National Economics University.

Nga said she had been interested in and researching this field for a long time. “In my opinion, e-commerce is a fast-growing industry that requires dynamism, quick thinking, and high adaptability. I want to try my hand at new and more independent fields,” the student shared.

Currently, An Nga is a first-year student. One thing she always keeps in mind is: "Education is the door, but you have to be the one to turn the doorknob." Nga believes that the school only provides knowledge and tools, but whether or not those tools are used to achieve dreams and a future depends on each individual's initiative.

"Great achievements don't discriminate by ethnicity or region; they depend on self-belief and a willingness to face challenges. Therefore, one shouldn't limit oneself because of one's living circumstances or being from an ethnic minority," Nga said.

With her achievements, in 2025, An Nga will be one of 150 outstanding and exemplary ethnic minority students and young people honored by the Ministry of Ethnic Minorities and Religions.

In the future, Russia plans to work in the field of digital marketing, and may also contribute to promoting its domestic products to larger markets.
