Formerly a highly successful athlete in national and international competitions in traditional martial arts, Muay Thai, and kickboxing, after retiring from fighting, Ms. Mai continued her dedication to martial arts as a coach for traditional martial arts in the province. Alongside her professional work, she devoted much of her energy to building and developing a martial arts club. The Tuyet Mai Fighter Martial Arts Club, established in 2017, has become a familiar place for young people, students, and even office workers who want to improve their health in a healthy and disciplined environment.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of the female instructor, the martial arts class is becoming increasingly well-known. The training facility is also well-equipped with modern equipment and training tools, combining traditional and contemporary martial arts. Ms. Mai shared: “As a woman, maintaining the martial arts class is more challenging, and sometimes it can be a barrier that makes some male students hesitant. The club is not only a place for people to practice martial arts but also helps me make a living from my expertise and passion.”

Every day, from 6 PM to 8 PM, the club bustles with numerous martial arts students participating in training. After warm-up exercises, students practice stances, punches, kicks, and sandbag training, progressing to sparring on the mat. Each movement is performed seriously and decisively, demonstrating discipline and high concentration. Dressed in dynamic martial arts attire, Nguyen Gia Huy, residing in Long Xuyen ward, and his fellow students warm up in preparation for training. Possessing a large and muscular physique, Gia Huy is no novice in the ring, having trained in traditional martial arts, Vovinam, Boxing, and Muay Thai, and having won many awards at provincial-level martial arts competitions. “I’ve been training at the club since its early days, with a frequency of 7 sessions per week. When I was in high school, due to a busier school schedule, I maintained training at about 3 sessions per week. I’m very passionate about martial arts, and my family has always supported me. Learning martial arts not only helps me lose weight and improve my health, but also instills discipline and helps relieve stress after school,” Gia Huy shared.
Recalling the early days of opening her martial arts class, Ms. Mai said that at that time, only a handful of students came to practice. Despite facing many difficulties, she maintained the class with the desire to contribute to the development of the martial arts movement in the locality. “Since I was an athlete, I have always dreamed of building a place with good training conditions so that those who love martial arts can train, satisfy their passion, and improve their health. I also want to create a quality training environment for young people and middle-aged people as well,” Ms. Mai said.
Notably, the class attracts not only male students but also a significant number of female participants. Bao Truong Thanh Nghi, a resident of Long Xuyen ward, joined the club with the goal of learning self-defense skills. However, after some training, she realized that martial arts offered more benefits than expected. “When practicing martial arts, I not only improved my physical fitness and health but also developed perseverance and calmness to solve problems. Learning martial arts helps us lead a healthy lifestyle and learn to care for and help those around us,” Thanh Nghi shared.
More than just a gathering place for martial arts enthusiasts, the Tuyet Mai Fighter Martial Arts Club is also a place for discovering and training many young talents. Many of the club's students have achieved high results at provincial-level tournaments and friendly martial arts competitions in the Mekong Delta region. At the 1st Provincial Sports Festival in 2026, the club's athletes contributed to the overall first place achievement of Long Xuyen ward (Cluster II) with 6 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals.
According to Ms. Mai, to help martial arts students train effectively, the coaching staff always focuses on developing a scientific curriculum and training methods suitable for each age group and individual. This helps students better grasp techniques, gradually improve their physical fitness, and contribute to promoting the martial arts movement in the local area.
