Each year, Muong Hum commune supplies the market with 80-100 tons of commercial fish, bringing in tens of billions of dong in income for the local people.

As one of the pioneering households in cold-water fish farming in Muong Hum, after many years of accumulation, the family of Mr. Ly Lao Ta, Kin Chu Phin village, now has more than 10 ponds for raising sturgeon and salmon, with about 11,000 marketable fish ready for sale.

It is estimated that, with the current farming output, each batch of fish raised by his family can supply the market with about 20 tons of fish, each weighing 2-3 kg or more, bringing in an income of over 2 billion VND.

According to Mr. Ly Lao Ta, he started raising cold-water fish in 2015. Initially, because it was a new species and he lacked experience, he only tried it on a small scale.

After visiting and learning from experiences in several localities and realizing that the economic efficiency was higher compared to other production models, his family boldly expanded the farming area.

Although the price of commercial fish has decreased compared to previous years, with favorable natural conditions, raising cold-water fish remains a development direction that brings high and stable economic efficiency to his family.

The family of Mr. Ly Sin Dun is also one of the largest cold-water fish farming households in the commune. Currently, Mr. Dun's family maintains nearly 10 ponds for raising commercial sturgeon with 10,000 fingerlings; thanks to diligently learning techniques and following the correct farming process, the family's fish production is good, with a low mortality rate.

According to Mr. Dùn, cold-water fish farming requires technical expertise and significant initial investment, but if done correctly, the economic efficiency is quite stable, because this is a unique species that cannot be raised everywhere.

For cold-water fish farming, besides broodstock and care techniques, the most important factor is water source. Thanks to its large area of natural forest and favorable conditions, the water source in Muong Hum commune is always abundant, with stable temperatures, meeting the requirements for developing cold-water fish farming.

In addition, the people actively cooperate with local authorities to protect forests and preserve water sources, contributing to maintaining a stable water supply for production.

Mr. Ly Gi Go, Head of Kin Chu Phin village, said: "Over the years, the villagers have always raised their awareness of forest protection, refrained from illegal logging, and regularly participated in forest patrols organized by the local authorities, thereby contributing to maintaining a stable water source for cold-water fish farming."

According to statistics from the People's Committee of the commune, there are currently 50 households and businesses participating in cold-water fish farming, with a total area of nearly 5 hectares, mainly concentrated in the villages of Kin Chu Phin, Ta Ta Le, and Ta Po Ho.

The annual production of cold-water fish reaches approximately 80-100 tons, mainly commercial sturgeon and salmon, bringing in tens of billions of dong in income for the local people.

Comrade Pham Anh Xuan, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Commune Party Committee, said that developing cold-water fish farming is a suitable direction for the local natural conditions, helping to increase people's income and contributing to the formation of a high-value commodity production area.

In the coming period, the commune will continue to orient the development of the fish industry towards sustainability, creating conditions to promote production and consumption linkages, gradually increasing the economic value and building a brand for local cold-water fish.

Coldwater fish farming activities will be managed according to specific plans, linked to the water resource capacity and ecological environmental conditions. Local authorities also encourage people to develop in the right direction, limiting spontaneous expansion that could affect the environment.
