From two cows to a new direction
The morning in Con Ngoa village, Thuy Hung commune, has the first chill of the season, dew drops still lingering on the grass. Mr. Chu Van Minh stands next to the cowshed, his hands quickly spreading straw. This man used to be near-poor, his whole family only depends on a few fields, with an unstable income depending on the season.
However, in 2023, when he received support for two breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, his family had a clear foothold for change.
He kept the barn clean, vaccinated fully, and actively learned techniques from veterinary staff. Less than a year later, the herd had calves. The increase in herd, although not fast, was sure enough for him to believe that the path he chose was the right one.

By 2024, his family will officially escape poverty. He spoke simply but clearly: "I will try to take good care of the cows so they can reproduce more and plant more forests to improve the economy ."
Previously, poverty came from lack of capital and lack of production tools. Now, from two cows, Mr. Minh has created a long-term resource. The breed grows well, experience increases, and most importantly, the spirit of daring to develop. Every morning, the sound of the cows slowly grazing like the rhythm of time saved by the whole family, reminds them that the path out of poverty is not far if they know how to keep and nurture the first opportunity.
Change from people's initiative
In Binh Chuong 2 village, Dinh Lap commune, Mr. Chu Van Toi's story is a further testament to the effectiveness of livestock support. For many years, his family's economy revolved around a few fields, life was slow and difficult. In 2023, he was supported with two breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction.
He did not just receive the cows and leave them there, but also actively participated in training, changed the way they were raised, built airtight barns, kept them clean, and stored food for the winter. One cow gave birth to a calf, bringing clear hope. He also raised chickens and pigs to increase his income and diversify his family's sources of income. By the end of 2024, Mr. Toi's family would escape poverty. He said: "I will take care of the cows to be healthy to increase the number of cows, thereby having a stable livelihood."
From the stories of Mr. Minh and Mr. Toi, it can be seen that the effectiveness of supporting breeding animals is only really effective when people are proactive. The important thing is not just the two cows, but the change in awareness. People do not wait, but proactively develop more livestock, expand the model. Breed animals become the capital, and will is what determines the long-term direction.
Giving capital, giving trust
The successful models of Mr. Minh, Mr. Toi and many other households receiving support show that supporting breeding animals is the right direction, but it does not stop at just giving breeding animals. Local authorities must provide technical guidance, closely monitor the process, and provide timely encouragement.
In Dinh Lap commune, the big lesson learned is to raise people's awareness, eliminate the mentality of dependence, and work together to overcome difficulties. Chairman of the People's Committee Nguyen Chien Hiep emphasized the importance of propaganda, training, and replicating good models so that people believe they can stand up for themselves.

In 2025, the commune will continue to support production development for poor and near-poor households with a total budget of more than 800 million VND, striving to reduce the multidimensional poverty rate to 4.51%, a decrease of 1.67% compared to 2024. These figures not only reflect budget efforts, but more importantly, the determination to create substantive changes, focusing on livelihood development.
A cow does not make you rich immediately, but it opens up a new way of life. When people have cows, knowledge and confidence, they create profits from the land they stand on. Supporting cows thus not only helps to escape poverty but also fosters confidence, fosters a future that people can build with their own hands.
