The information office said this was an aggressive form of cancer, but appeared to be sensitive to hormones, and this could offer a chance of effective control of the disease.
"His family is reviewing treatment options with doctors," the office updated.
Biden had recently experienced increasing urinary symptoms and was examined by a doctor. Doctors found an unusual lump in his prostate. On May 16, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 (grade 5), and cancer cells had spread to his bones.
Biden has prostate cancer, President Donald Trump wishes him a speedy recovery
If detected early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. However, it is also the second leading cause of cancer death in men.
One in eight men will be diagnosed with this cancer during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.
What is the prostate?
The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. It produces a fluid that is a component of semen. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body through the penis).
Because it surrounds the urethra, any enlargement or damage to the prostate can affect urination. In adults, the prostate is about the size of a walnut.
How serious is Biden's cancer?
According to information from former President Biden's office about his illness, the cancer has spread to his bones, which makes his condition more serious than early-stage prostate cancer.
Treatment outcomes have improved over the past few decades, and patients with metastatic prostate cancer can expect to live four to five years or longer if treatment goes well, points out Dr. Matthew Smith at Massachusetts General Brigham and Women's Cancer Center.
"It is treatable, but not curable," says Dr. Smith.
What treatment options are available?
Prostate cancer can be treated with drugs that reduce hormone levels in the body or block hormones from entering prostate cancer cells. These drugs can slow the growth of cancer cells.
“Most men with this condition will be treated with medication and will not be recommended for surgery or radiation,” says Dr. Smith.
Kamala Harris calls Biden a "warrior"
Former US Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr Biden's running mate, has praised him as a "warrior".
"(My husband) Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden's diagnosis of prostate cancer. Our thoughts and prayers are with President Biden and his entire family during this time.
"Joe is a fighter and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience and optimism that has always defined his life and leadership. We hope for a full and speedy recovery," Harris posted on social network X on May 18.
Joe Biden, 82, left office in January this year, the oldest serving president in US history. Throughout his presidency, Biden faced many questions about his age and health, eventually forcing him to abandon his re-election campaign.
