The governor of the western state of Táchira said there is “an international conspiracy to sabotage the peace of Venezuela, especially this border area (…) Following the directive of President Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela will close its border with Colombia from 5 a.m. today (January 10) until 5 a.m. Monday (January 13)”.

Meanwhile, former opposition candidate Edmundo González, Mr. Maduro's opponent in the presidential election in late July 2024, also said he would return to Caracas on January 10 to assume the country's presidency, after declaring himself the winner.
Mr. Edmundo González has been on official visits to Argentina, Uruguay, the United States, Panama and the Dominican Republic in recent days to seek political support. The leaders of these countries have all expressed their support for Mr. Edmundo González to assume the presidency.
Last week, the Venezuelan government announced a $100,000 reward for the capture of Edmundo González, who is living in exile in Spain.
Venezuela's Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, has vowed to arrest Mr González if he returns to the country to face trial for the crimes he has committed.
According to the National Electoral Council (CNE), in the presidential election on July 28, Mr. Maduro won 51.95% of the vote and Mr. Edmundo Gonzalez won 43.18%.
