In a post on the social network Truth Social on December 8, US President Donald Trump said the US government has officially allowed Nvidia to export H200 chips to China, a market estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars to this technology giant.

This would be a major victory for the world's largest chipmaker, which has been lobbying for months to ease export restrictions set to take effect from 2022.

Mr. Trump added that he had informed Chinese President Xi Jinping about this move and received a positive response.

"I informed President Xi of China that the United States will allow NVIDIA to ship the H200 chip to approved customers in China and other countries, provided that they continue to maintain strong national security. President Xi responded positively. 25% will be paid to the United States," President Trump wrote.

Reuters quoted a White House official as saying the 25% fee would be collected as an import tax from Taiwan (China, where the H200 chip is manufactured) to the US. Here, the chip would undergo a security review by officials before being exported to China.

President Trump's latest move came as a surprise, as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said earlier that he could not predict China's ability to import H200 chips, even if the US government loosened export controls. The statement came after a meeting between him and US President Donald Trump in Washington on December 4.

In a quick exchange with reporters, Mr. Huang confirmed that the two sides had discussed technology export controls, but refused to disclose details.

“We don’t know and we don’t have any new clues. Nvidia can’t downgrade the chips it sells to China because they won’t accept it,” Mr. Huang said.

Nvidia has previously been allowed to export the H20 chip, a nerfed version designed to meet current limits. The H200 chip is nearly six times more powerful than the H20, according to a report by the Institute for Progress (IFP).
