Zelenskyy seeks 'truly just peace' for Ukraine

In a post on social network X, Mr Zelenskyy said: "This autumn will decide the future of the war."

Mr Zelenskyy made an unannounced stop in President Joe Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, to visit an ammunition factory that he said was ramping up production of 155mm artillery shells vital to Ukraine’s war effort.

"It is in places like this that you can truly feel that the democratic world can win," the Ukrainian president shared on X, along with a photo of him thanking factory workers.

Zelenskyy’s concerns about ammunition shortages have become more urgent as Russia continues to attack Ukraine’s power grid ahead of the crucial winter months. In his speech, he stressed that Ukraine is doing everything it can, from buying weapons to waging diplomacy, to shore up support among its partners and force Russia to negotiate peace .

Mr Zelenskyy flew to New York, where he is expected to meet with US business leaders to discuss Ukraine's energy needs, as well as meet with leaders of countries and international organizations.

Mr Zelenskyy's visit coincides with US efforts to prepare a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, breaking a recent trend of smaller aid packages.

He is expected to present his “plan for victory” in the war with Russia to President Biden, and he is expected to discuss it with Vice President Kamala Harris and other leaders on Thursday.

President Zelenskyy hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has criticized US aid to Ukraine as a waste of money and has not committed to supporting a Ukrainian victory. Mr Trump has said he may meet with Mr Zelenskyy this week, but no specific date has been announced.

The package is expected to include patrol boats, additional ammunition for the HIMARS rocket system, 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, spare parts and other weapons. The content and size of the package could change in the coming days before it is signed by Mr. Biden.

According to Ukrinform, Mr Zelenskyy will address a UN summit on Monday, attend Security Council meetings on Ukraine on Tuesday, and address the General Assembly on Wednesday.
