Since its launch, ChatGPT has operated as a one-on-one conversation, where you ask questions and the AI chatbot answers. However, OpenAI is taking a bolder step by testing group chat – a group chat feature with up to 20 people.
The new feature allows multiple users to converse with ChatGPT in a common conversation, instead of having to send each command separately as before. This operation significantly reduces the interruption in interaction, creating a more natural and seamless conversation feel. This is also the approach that Microsoft recently implemented in Copilot to improve collaboration when working in groups.

Group Chat is powered by OpenAI's latest language model, GPT-5.1, which allows the system to better understand context and respond more accurately. The AI can monitor the entire flow of a group discussion and decide for itself when to join in and when to stay silent.
As a result, ChatGPT doesn’t appear in every message, but acts like a real member of the group: speaking only when the content is appropriate or when called directly by name. In addition, the system can also use emojis and recognize members’ profile pictures to reference in replies, making the conversation more natural and closer.
Technically, the system will automatically select the most suitable model within the scope of each user's plan to generate a response. Notably, the usage limit is only calculated when ChatGPT actually responds, and this data is directly deducted from the account of the person the AI is responding to in the conversation.
To address privacy concerns, OpenAI claims that users’ personal memory will not be used in group chats, nor will the AI “learn” or store content from these conversations. Additionally, if ChatGPT detects that there are members under the age of 18 in a group, it will automatically activate a filter, restricting sensitive content for all participants.
According to OpenAI, starting a group chat is simple. Users just need to tap the 'Everyone' icon in an existing chat, then share the invite link. Any member of the group can invite others, with a maximum limit of 20 members. When joining, each person will set up a basic profile with a name, username, and avatar, making it easy to identify in the group.
The feature is currently being tested by OpenAI for both paid (Go, Plus, Pro) and free users in four regions including Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand and South Korea. Based on feedback from the initial testing phase, the company will consider expanding the feature to the global market.
This is considered a strategic move by OpenAI, bringing ChatGPT beyond the role of a single personal tool and becoming an indispensable part in many fields, from teamwork, education , entertainment to daily conversations.
