Oscar once played in China. |
Brazilian football was quiet this morning. From São Paulo, the news that Oscar had to be hospitalized for a heart attack stunned the entire football world. He was not injured on the field, he did not fall after a tackle, but collapsed in the medical examination room, a place that should only be reserved for normal numbers.
At 34, the Sao Paulo star is still trying to hold on to his career with discipline and faith. But his heart, quite literally, betrayed him. During a cycling stress test, his heart suddenly went into a rhythm disorder. Sao Paulo doctors immediately transferred Oscar to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, where he is currently in stable condition.
This is not the first time this has happened. Since August, Oscar has been under special supervision due to signs of heart problems, following a spinal injury that forced him to take a three-month break. At the time, Oscar said bluntly: “If my heart has problems, I will stop.” The words now ring like a sad prophecy.
Since leaving China to return to Brazil, Oscar has never really been himself. Hip, thigh, calf, and now heart injuries have turned his return journey into a silent battle between mind and body. He has played just 21 games in nearly two years, scoring two goals, far too few for a player who was once considered the soul of Chelsea, and the bright spot for the Selecão at the 2014 World Cup.
Oscar’s story is no longer about football. It is about human limitations, about a talented player having to accept that sometimes his heart does not listen to his ambition. In Brazil, people still call him the “sad beauty” of the generation after Neymar. Perhaps now, what he needs most is not a shot into the far corner, but peace for his own body.
If this is the end, Oscar leaves as an artist who once made the audience believe that every pass had a soul.
