Working alongside Peter Jackson are the screenwriting duo Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who were behind the hugely successful "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which won 17 out of 30 Oscar nominations and grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing film series in cinema history.
Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav said that, in addition to Peter Jackson's team, this project also has the participation of two screenwriters Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou with the ambition to "bring untold stories to the screen".
However, unlike the three films "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", this time Peter Jackson will take on the role of producer, leaving the director's chair to Andy Serkis - who played Gollum in the original series. Serkis will also take on the role of the main actor in the role that has become a symbol of his acting career.
Last February, Warner Bros. first announced that it would continue making films in the "Lord of the Rings" universe after successfully negotiating a deal with the representative of author JRR Tolkien.
Under the agreement, Warner Bros., through its subsidiary New Line Cinema, will not only develop two more Lord of the Rings films, but will also produce an animated film set in Middle-earth titled "The Battle of the Rohirrim." The film is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2024, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, and set 200 years before the events of "The Hobbit."
Director Peter Jackson said: "It is an honor and a privilege for me and my colleagues to continue making films about the world of Middle-earth. I know Andy Serkis still has a lot of unfinished business with his character: Gollum".
“As lifelong fans of JR Tolkien and his vast literary legacy, we are proud to partner with Warner Bros. to bring another epic and epic adventure to the big screen.”
The three "Lord of the Rings" films were released from 2001 to 2003. Starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin and Cate Blanchett, the series won 17 Oscars, including Best Picture for the third film, "The Return of the King."
The series also created a huge attraction for tourism in New Zealand, the homeland of director Peter Jackson. The filming location of The Hobbiton became a popular tourist destination.
