Specifically, the focus shifted from primarily on French-speaking African countries to also engaging with English-speaking nations. For the first time, a high-level meeting between France and African countries was held in an English-speaking African nation. Leaders from over 30 African countries and international organizations attended this special event.
Macron's goal is to build French influence in English-speaking African countries, particularly in the eastern part of the continent. This has become necessary and urgent for France after West Africa gradually slipped out of France's sphere of influence in all aspects. In this region, some countries that were traditional strategic allies of France for a long time have distanced themselves from France for various reasons, including disappointment with France and the emergence of more external partners to cooperate with or rely on, causing the links between France and French-speaking African countries in general to become fragmented, more formal than substantive.
Macron's new approach, reflected in this foreign policy adjustment, is both timely and practical. However, rebuilding to compensate for losses in Africa is no easy task, as France must compete with China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and several other partners.
