Launching the 9th "Overcoming Adversity" Writing Contest

On the morning of May 20, 2026, in Hanoi, the Youth Magazine, in collaboration with the Academy of Journalism and Communication and the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Disabled People and Orphans, launched the 9th "Overcoming Adversity" writing contest.

Attending the launching ceremony were: Dr. Vu Van Tien, Member of the 16th National Assembly, full-time member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society; Mr. Vu Hong Huy - Deputy Director of the Department of Health, Sports, Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee; Mr. To Hong Nam - Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Information ( Ministry of Education and Training ); Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Quynh - Acting Chief of the Office of the Vietnam Catholic Solidarity Committee, Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; and Mr. Vu Van Chuc, Deputy Head of the Youth Union's Working Committee (Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union).

Representing the Organizing Committee were: Journalist Nguyen Toan Thang - Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Magazine, Head of the Organizing Committee of the competition; Mr. Do Manh Hung - former Deputy Head of the National Assembly Office, Vice President of the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Disabled People and Orphans (6th term); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Van Quang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Deputy Director of the Academy of Journalism and Communication; Journalist Pham Huong Ngat - Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs and Propaganda Department of the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Disabled People and Orphans; and Mr. Vu Quoc Cuong, Chief of Office of the Academy of Journalism and Communication.

Prof. Dr. Pham Viet Thang, Head of the Political Theory & Civic Education Department, Hanoi Pedagogical University; Journalist Vu Nhat Thang, Acting Head of the Photojournalism Club, Vietnam Journalists Association ; and representatives from the Student Beauty Contest Organizing Committee.

Journalist Nguyen Toan Thang, Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Magazine and Head of the Organizing Committee, launched the 9th "Overcoming Adversity" writing contest.

Speaking at the ceremony, Editor-in-Chief of Youth Magazine Nguyen Toan Thang said: The "Overcoming Adversity" writing contest was first organized in 1999. Over its 28-year journey and eight editions, the contest has not only been an activity behind the newspaper but has become a persistent journey spreading faith, resilience, and the aspiration to overcome adversity among Vietnamese people.

Through authentic and emotionally rich writings, hundreds of extraordinary examples of resilience have been discovered, promoted, and widely disseminated throughout the community. These are individuals who, despite disabilities and losses, have bravely overcome adversity to study, work, and create.

Journalist Pham Huong Ngat – Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs and Propaganda Department, Vietnam Association for the Protection of Disabled People and Orphans, announced the rules for the 9th "Overcoming Fate" writing contest.

The contest is open to cadres, Party members, civil servants, public employees, members of the armed forces, Youth Union members, students, and all segments of the population (intellectuals, artists, journalists, religious leaders, and foreigners living and working in Vietnam). Schools, agencies, and social organizations may submit entries under their own name or the name of a group of authors.

The competition focuses on showcasing real-life examples of people with disabilities, orphans, and especially young people who have shown great resilience in overcoming adversity, disabilities, and difficult circumstances to excel in their studies, work, and careers, and to live fulfilling lives for society. Entries that discover and promote exemplary individuals in learning, applying science and technology, digital transformation, and innovation are encouraged; demonstrating the proactive spirit, the will to succeed, and the aspiration to take control of their lives in the digital age.

The competition also aims to honor young people with disabilities who are strong-willed, dynamic, creative, and know how to overcome their limitations, proactively access science and technology, and effectively apply digital achievements to their studies, work, and lives. Through this, it contributes to spreading the spirit of living beautifully and responsibly, encouraging the emulation movement of self-improvement and career development among young people, in anticipation of the 13th National Congress of the Youth Union, term 2026-2031.

The competition encourages the recognition of groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to supporting people with disabilities, orphans, and those in difficult circumstances, especially in remote areas, border regions, islands, and ethnic minority communities.

The organizers especially encourage people with disabilities, orphans, and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to write directly about their journeys of overcoming difficulties, asserting themselves, and aspiring to succeed in life.

The submitted works should spread a spirit of humanism, a will to overcome difficulties, a desire to contribute, and faith in the good values ​​of life; contributing to building a model of Vietnamese youth who are resilient, live beautifully, and live responsibly in the new era.

In addition to the traditional awards for authors (including one Special Prize worth 15 million VND for disabled individuals or orphans who write about themselves, along with one A prize, two B prizes, three C prizes, and five Consolation prizes), the Organizing Committee will also award four meaningful thematic prizes (each worth 3 million VND): “Inspirational Figure”; “Figure Mastering Science and Technology”; “Shining Example of the New Era”; and “Innovator”.

At the launch ceremony, the Youth Magazine also signed cooperation agreements with partner organizations to strengthen resource connections, promote scientific research, digital transformation, and accompany young people in many meaningful activities. This cooperation signing is of practical significance in strengthening connections between the Youth Magazine and training institutions, research units, businesses, and partner organizations, aiming to promote scientific research, digital transformation, and the development of high-quality young human resources. This is both a professional collaboration and a synergy of knowledge, technology, and a desire to contribute; contributing to creating an environment for young scientists, experts, youth union members, and students to develop their creative abilities, spread academic values, and bring the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo into practical life.

Journalist Nguyen Toan Thang emphasized that 2026 is a year of important milestones, great responsibilities, and strong aspirations for national development. Vietnam is entering a phase of accelerated digital transformation, promoting innovation and creating new breakthroughs in the new era of development. This is also the year of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 13th National Congress of the Vietnam Youth Union for the 2026-2031 term; the 136th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth, along with many significant events for the Youth Magazine such as: the publication of the 100th issue of the Youth Scientific Research journal; the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam Youth e-magazine (thanhnienviet.vn); and especially the milestone of the Youth Scientific Research journal having its scoring system upgraded to 0.75 points per scientific article by the State Council of Professors, and recently being recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as meeting Vietnamese scientific standards.

Continuing this humanitarian journey, the 9th "Overcoming Adversity" writing contest not only spreads the positive values ​​of compassion and resilience, but also contributes to inspiring the spirit of overcoming difficulties, the will to strive for success, and faith in the strength of the Vietnamese people in the digital age.

With nearly three decades of consistently spreading resilience and human values, the "Overcoming Adversity" writing contest continues to be expected to become a widely inspiring forum, where stories of overcoming adversity not only touch the hearts of readers but also awaken a spirit of living beautifully and responsibly, spreading faith, aspirations for contribution, and positive energy in the community, especially among today's young generation.
