According to the World Health Organization, smoking causes many chronic and incurable diseases and is the leading cause of death that we can prevent. There are about 7,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, of which 69 are carcinogenic and are the cause of 25 different groups of diseases, including 11 types of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and reproductive health effects for both men and women. It is estimated that 1 in 2 smokers will die prematurely, of which 1/2 of the deaths occur in middle age.
In addition to the health effects, tobacco use also causes economic losses to individuals, families and society, including expenditures on smoking, costs for medical examination and treatment of smoking-related diseases, loss of/loss of working capacity due to illness and premature death, and losses due to fires and explosions caused by smoking. According to estimates by the World Health Organization, the global economic loss caused by tobacco is 1,400 billion USD each year.
WHO calls on countries to increase tobacco taxes at high levels to encourage smokers to quit smoking and prevent young people from starting to smoke. Taxing tobacco excises at 70-75% of retail prices will help significantly reduce tobacco use and protect people's health. At the same time, it calls on leaders, researchers, social activists and the community to join hands in efforts to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco and new tobacco products (e-cigarettes, heated tobacco, Shisha and other new tobacco products...); prevent the initiation of heated tobacco products, electronic cigarettes...
At the recent rally in response to World No Tobacco Day and National No Tobacco Week (May 25-31), on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan called on ministries, branches, People's Committees of provinces and cities to direct the strengthening of the implementation of the Law on Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms. At the same time, he sent a message to smokers: Quit smoking today, join hands to build a smoke-free living and working environment to protect the health of yourself, your family and the community.
In the Communication Campaign, the Fund for Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms will promote propaganda about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, especially on social networking sites (Tik Tok, Youtube, Facebook) to provide timely information and mobilize the participation of a large number of young people and students. Media videos with the message "Say no to e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products to protect the young generation" will be broadcast nationwide from May 27 to July 16 on central and local television channels, cinema systems in major cities, apartments, high-rise buildings and social networking channels, helping the message reach a large number of people nationwide. In addition, the Fund will coordinate with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to organize a competition to design communication products to propagate the harmful effects of e-cigarettes, sign an online commitment to support the Campaign "Vietnamese Youth Say No to Tobacco and E-cigarettes"...
