(CLO) A piece of the outer mold of a bronze drum, complete with decorative floral motifs, was recently obtained during the excavation of the Luy Lau ancient citadel.
This is the information announced by the National Museum of History and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province on December 20 after the archaeological excavation of the Luy Lau ancient citadel.
Accordingly, during the excavation, the archaeological team collected more than 2,300 pieces of bronze drum molds.

Notably, there is a large outer mold piece of the drum face, complete with decorative floral motifs from the center of the drum to the outer rim, along with mold pieces at the drum's body, body and feet.
This new discovery has added to the awareness and accurate perception of the bronze drums cast at Luy Lau.
Experts say that Luy Lau is a large metallurgical and bronze casting center that is very valuable in the study of the bronze drum casting process of ancient Vietnamese people and the strong vitality of Dong Son culture in the flow of national history.
Therefore, it is necessary to continue to excavate this workshop relic at Luy Lau ancient citadel, in order to comprehensively understand the activities related to metallurgy and bronze casting here.

In addition, after many years of excavating Luy Lau, this is the first time that a large number of relics and artifacts from the Tran Dynasty have been discovered, scattered in the upper layers of soil of the citadel. This shows that during the Tran Dynasty, the Luy Lau citadel area was used for quite a long time.
Luy Lau is an ancient citadel located on the banks of the Dau River, which was the headquarters of Giao Chi district and the capital of Giao Chau in the past. In 1999, Dr. Nishimura Masanari (Japan) discovered a piece of the first bronze drum mold in the Inner Citadel area. This discovery opened up the hope for archaeologists to find traces of a bronze drum casting center right in the heart of the ancient Luy Lau citadel.
In 2014, the National Museum of History, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province and the University of East Asia (Japan) jointly excavated and discovered traces of a metallurgical and bronze casting workshop, finding hundreds of bronze drum molds and related objects.
