Researchers recently concluded their fifth season of excavations at Bremenium, a Roman fort in Northumberland, about 24 miles (39 kilometers) north of Hadrian’s Wall. Originally built in the late first century AD, Bremenium served as a key base for military operations in Scotland and as a warning to the Romans of attacks from the north. Photo: John Watson / CC.
