Immersing herself in the cultural performance imbued with the Ede culture at the community tourism site of Tong Ju village, Ea Kao ward, Dak Lak province, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Trang, from Ho Chi Minh City, expressed her impression with the performances staged and performed by the villagers themselves. The xoang dances, wine invitation rituals, gong sounds combined with the rustic village space created a different experience.

The pilot model of "Developing OCOP products on community tourism associated with promoting cultural values and traditional crafts" suggests more directions for tourism development in Kuop village.

“I have seen the dances and found them very interesting. They have preserved the culture of the Central Highlands very well. I think they have preserved their costumes, their clothing, and their cultural identity very well. They have also preserved their gongs very well. This is the first time I have attended a festival like this,” said Ms. Trang.

Possessing a simple beauty with traditional long houses, handicrafts such as weaving, making rice wine, making handicrafts... and unique cuisine , Tong Ju village is promoting its advantages to develop eco-tourism and experiential tourism. People actively improve the quality of services, establish art troupes, folk music groups, culinary groups... to create more attractiveness for tourists. Ms. H Yam Bkrong, Head of the Tong Ju village community tourism group, said that becoming a community tourism destination not only helps the village attract more tourists but is also an opportunity for local people to introduce and spread the natural beauty and unique culture of the Ede people.

“Currently, our art troupe has 22 members, a culinary team of 4 people and a weaving team of 42 people. When guests come to experience, we will introduce them to the culture of the Ede people in Buon Ma Thuot, and also create conditions to increase income for the people,” Ms. H Yam Bkrong shared more.

Becoming a community tourism destination creates opportunities for people of Tong Ju village (Ea Kao ward, Dak Lak province) to introduce and spread the natural beauty and unique culture of the people.

Not only Tong Ju village, the whole Dak Lak province currently has 10 invested community tourism villages, many of which have welcomed stable visitors. At Kuop village (Ea Na commune), infrastructure and landscape items have been renovated for two years now. The village still retains 50 traditional long houses, gong space, folk songs, xoang dance and many handicrafts. People are trained in tourism skills, and study experiences in localities with strengths in community tourism. In particular, Kuop village was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) to participate in the pilot model of "Developing OCOP products on community tourism associated with promoting cultural values and traditional crafts". This suggests more directions for local community tourism to quickly catch up with the previously announced community tourism villages.

Ms. H No H Dok, Head of Kuop village, said: “Because people have not seen it, they will not believe it if they only hear about it. They have to see it, then see the profits of the houses that have done it before, then gradually they will learn and follow. Then from there, people from difficult places will develop their economy, gradually eliminating hunger and reducing poverty through community tourism like in other places.”

Identifying the strength of developing eco-tourism and culture, in recent years, Dak Lak province has issued many resolutions on preserving gong culture, supporting the development of community tourism in ethnic minority villages and hamlets. At the same time, focusing on integrating resources from national target programs, connecting economic development with heritage conservation to reasonably exploit the cultural values of local ethnic groups.

People gradually take advantage of cultural differences to do tourism.

Mr. Tran Hong Tien, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dak Lak province, said that developing community tourism not only contributes to economic efficiency, helps to change the way of doing things, creates livelihoods, and increases income for the community participating in tourism chains. At the same time, it contributes to raising awareness of preserving, promoting and promoting the unique traditional cultural values of the people associated with tourism development.

“Using culture to increase income, improve people's lives, but at the same time it is also to help people preserve and promote cultural heritage. Therefore, in the coming time we will take advantage of heritage spaces, and at the same time, through State investment, through national target programs to support ethnic minority villages to promote and preserve cultural values associated with tourism values in residential communities”, Mr. Tien added.

Community tourism contributes to preserving traditional culture

Not only does it open up new livelihoods and contribute to increasing people’s income, community tourism also creates motivation to preserve and spread the unique cultural values of the Central Highlands ethnic groups. With the right direction and the support of the State, community tourism villages in Dak Lak are gradually becoming attractive destinations on the region’s tourism map.
