On January 24th, information from the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center indicated the discovery of an ancient painting at the Khâm Thiên Giám relic site – a structure located within the Hue Imperial Citadel, on Hàn Thuyên Street, Phú Xuân Ward, Hue City.

The painting was unearthed during the cleaning and removal of old paint layers from the walls of the Khâm Thiên Giám historical site.
The painting was discovered during the cleaning and removal of old paint layers on the walls of the Khâm Thiên Giám historical site for restoration work. When the coating was removed, a drawing with a map-like layout appeared on the wall surface.

The map-like painting features three types of script: Chinese, Vietnamese, and French.
Initial observations indicate that the drawing, rendered in black lines, contains numerous symbols and characters belonging to three languages: Chinese, Vietnamese, and French. Chinese characters are the most numerous. At the top of the wall, a large line of Chinese characters is visible, but some strokes have faded due to the passage of time.

The Vietnamese text in the painting mentions several familiar place names and river names in Hue, such as An Cuu and Loi Nong. The French text, however, refers to a railway line.

Following this discovery, Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Imperial Citadel Conservation Center, stated that the unit will conduct a comprehensive survey and thoroughly inspect the walls and interior elements of the Khâm Thiên Giám relic site. Simultaneously, the content of the mural will be studied in depth to support restoration and conservation efforts and further clarify the historical value of the structure.
The Imperial Observatory (Khâm Thiên Giám) is known to have been established in 1803 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. Under the Nguyen dynasty, it was the agency responsible for astronomical observation, meteorological and hydrological measurements, weather forecasting, and compiling calendars for the entire country; it also handled the selection of auspicious days and times for court activities and folk rituals. Having undergone many historical changes, the monument is now in serious disrepair and needs restoration, preservation, and promotion of its value.
