For a long time, Mr. Tran Van Ky - a math teacher and head of the experiential learning and career guidance team at Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School - has harbored the ambition to establish a school-based traditional Southern Vietnamese folk music club. His goal is to create a platform for students to interact, enjoy, and cultivate their passion for this art form, contributing to the preservation and promotion of its artistic value. From idea to reality, he has overcome many difficulties and challenges. Teacher Ky shared: “We lacked operating funds, and even less money to invite experts and artisans to teach and guide students in their practice. In 2022, the school invited artisans from the Rach Gia City Traditional Music Club (now the Rach Gia Ward Traditional Music Club) to exchange ideas, helping students better understand traditional music, sparking their love and passion for it, and creating a bridge for them to connect with traditional music. Seeing the meaningfulness of the activity, artisans Vo Truong Dau and Hoai Thu taught the students for free; they have been accompanying the school throughout this time.”
Ms. Le Thi Nhieu (stage name Hoai Thu) - Deputy Head of the Traditional Music Club of Rach Gia Ward, shared: "We teach students for free, hoping that the art of traditional music will be passed down to the younger generation. When we see the children attentively listening to our lectures on traditional music and enthusiastically practicing, we are very happy."
The traditional Southern Vietnamese folk music (Đờn ca tài tử) experiential activities organized by Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School since 2022 have quickly attracted a large number of students. Students have begun to learn about the art of Đờn ca tài tử; they learn to sing and play the instruments; many have become core members of the school's Đờn ca tài tử movement, participating in performances, competitions, and winning high prizes in many Đờn ca tài tử contests. The school also organizes Đờn ca tài tử exchanges with many schools in the province, creating a wide-ranging platform for students to interact, learn, and spread awareness of appreciating and preserving this unique art form.
In December 2025, the Traditional Music Club of Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School was officially established, attracting a large number of teachers and students, including 31 official members. Mr. Tran Van Ky, the club's leader, said that this is a playground for all students at the school who are passionate about traditional music and want to hone their singing and playing skills. “The school is developing the club in stages, from building a foundation to expanding and improving it, to ensure sustainable and effective development. Besides organizing regular activities, the club also organizes exchanges and performances of traditional music within the school, creating a platform for students to showcase their talents,” Mr. Ky said.
Duong Hong Sa, a student in class 10A5 and a member of the Traditional Music Club at Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School, shared: “We received dedicated guidance from Mr. Vo Truong Dau and Ms. Hoai Thu, from basic to advanced knowledge, including how to maintain rhythm, control breathing, express emotions in each song, and the profound cultural significance of traditional music. Joining the club has made us love and be prouder of the traditional art forms of our nation; our singing and performing abilities have improved significantly.”
Ms. Vo Thuy Nga, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Culture and Arts, shared: “With the establishment of the Southern Traditional Music Club, Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School has made a positive contribution to preserving and promoting the artistic value of Southern traditional music. If this model is replicated in other schools in the province, it promises to contribute to the further development of the province's traditional music movement.”
The Traditional Music Club of Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School creates a learning and artistic creative environment that helps students develop their talents. With the dedicated support of the artists from the Traditional Music Club of Rach Gia Ward, and the funding from various organizations and individuals, the Traditional Music Club contributes to improving the quality of education and enriching the cultural and spiritual lives of students.
