Leverage to promote deep integration
The leaders of An Giang province affirmed that the border trade economy is not only a driving force for trade growth but also a lever to promote integration, cooperation and sustainable development of the province. An Giang has a system of seaports and international border gates such as Vinh Xuong, Tinh Bien, Ha Tien and many secondary border gates, creating favorable conditions for import-export activities and trade with Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Thong Nhat, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of An Giang, said that the import-export turnover and cross-border goods exchange have maintained stable growth in recent times, with diverse export items such as rice, seafood, processed agricultural products, consumer goods, etc. The province actively participates in trade promotion activities, international and regional fairs, especially in the fields of seafood, tourism, consumer goods, gradually building An Giang as an attractive trade destination, with the goal of becoming an "international trade gateway" in the Mekong Delta. The province strengthens cooperation with neighboring provinces of Cambodia, building a peaceful , friendly border and economic development between the two sides.
Border economic development is identified as a strategic pillar that the province will consolidate and expand in the period of 2021 - 2025, focusing on investing in technical infrastructure at border gates, attracting non-budget projects, developing logistics services, cross-border trade and residential economy. An Giang Border Gate Economic Zone is established as one of the new growth poles located on the key economic corridor of the Mekong Delta, contributing to promoting regional connectivity, expanding markets and ensuring national defense and security in border areas.
The province has invested more than 347 billion VND in border gate infrastructure projects, connecting roads, warehouses, border markets, etc., creating favorable conditions for the circulation of goods through the border gates of Tinh Bien, Vinh Xuong, Khanh Binh, and Ha Tien. At the same time, it has attracted 21 non-budget investment projects (including 1 FDI project) with a total registered capital of 1,224 billion VND; of which, 18 projects have come into operation in the fields of trade, services, tourism, logistics, and agricultural processing, contributing to promoting border trade with Cambodia and ASEAN, creating an important foundation for An Giang to effectively exploit the potential of border trade economy, promote regional connectivity, and international integration.
However, many “bottlenecks” in the development of An Giang’s border trade economy need to be invested in to overcome. Specifically, the transport infrastructure and logistics services connecting the border, seaports and production areas are not really synchronized; there is a lack of logistics centers and warehouses that meet international standards, logistics costs increase, reducing the competitiveness of export goods. Most local enterprises are small and medium-sized, have limited capital, lack international marketing strategies and the ability to participate deeply in the global supply chain, and have difficulty meeting large orders…
Besides, An Giang also faces fierce competition from cheap goods with diverse designs from ASEAN countries and China; the risk of smuggling, trade fraud and poor quality goods in an increasingly complicated trend...
Focus resources
The leaders of An Giang province emphasized that in the 2026 - 2030 period, they will focus on investing resources in developing the border trade economy and the province's border gate economic zones. Accordingly, they will strengthen traffic infrastructure connections, open more border gates, create momentum to promote connections with Cambodia, expand economic development space, and contribute to soon achieving the bilateral trade target between Vietnam and Cambodia of 15 billion USD.
Accordingly, the province has promoted the work of establishing, integrating, and adjusting the general planning for the construction of the An Giang Border Gate Economic Zone (including the integration of the Ha Tien International Border Gate Economic Zone) in a multi-sector and multi-sector direction. The province has implemented the plan to operate and upgrade the national border gates of Khanh Binh and Giang Thanh into international border gates; the two main border gates of Bac Dai and Na Sap; and opened the secondary border gates of Khanh An, Vinh Gia, Vinh Nguon, and the area of landmark 314.
On the other hand, the province continues to develop and complete zoning plans for functional areas, invest in developing important technical infrastructure and social infrastructure systems in the border gate areas of Vinh Xuong, Tinh Bien, Khanh Binh and Ha Tien to attract investors, creating favorable conditions for economic trade and people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Cambodia. The province invests in commercial and logistics infrastructure, synchronously upgrades seaports and border gates, builds modern logistics and cold storage centers in border gate and seaport areas; creates an effective interconnection system between roads, waterways, and maritime, connecting from production areas to border gates and international seaports.
At the same time, An Giang expands trade, service, and tourism cooperation with the Kingdom of Cambodia, Thailand, and Singapore; and at the same time, links with provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta to form a supply - processing - export chain and coordinates investment in inter-regional transport infrastructure to optimize costs.
In the development of border trade economy, Chau Doc is positioned as an important center of tourism and border trade economy through Tinh Bien international border gate. The Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, connecting with Tran De seaport, will significantly expand the trading space, helping to reduce logistics costs.
Similarly, Ha Tien has developed into an important center of maritime economy - tourism - border trade in the Southwest region, contributing to promoting regional connectivity and international economic integration. Secretary of the Ha Tien Ward Party Committee Nguyen Luu Trung emphasized that with its strategic geographical location, bordering the Kingdom of Cambodia and close to international shipping routes, Ha Tien plays the role of an important gateway for trade between the Mekong Delta and ASEAN countries, creating favorable conditions for strong development of border trade. Ha Tien focuses on developing the Ha Tien Border Gate Economic Zone to form an international trade center, directly connecting with Cambodia through the Ha Tien border gate and trans-Asia routes.
The province focuses on upgrading National Highway 80, Route N1, the coastal corridor connecting Ha Tien with Kien Luong, Rach Gia and the southwestern provinces; developing the seaport system and logistics services, serving international freight transport, promoting border trade and international cooperation. Building a road leading to Ha Tien General Port to connect with Phu Quoc and Sihanoukville Port (Cambodia).
Secretary of the Party Committee of Ha Tien Ward Nguyen Luu Trung shared that Ha Tien promotes economic cooperation with provinces bordering Cambodia, creating an open investment environment for businesses; promotes trade of goods through Ha Tien International Border Gate, connecting with neighboring localities to form a dynamic growth pole; develops Ha Tien in the direction of "border gate economy - marine economy - border tourism", both exploiting geographical advantages and expanding international cooperation.
With systematic investment in border economic development, it is expected that An Giang will affirm its position as the "international trade gateway" of the Mekong Delta.
