With over 30 years of experience in the ornamental plant business, Ms. Vu Thi Thanh in Nam Dien commune (Nam Truc) has a lot of experience in choosing plant varieties and creating beautiful products that suit consumer tastes. Originally born in a famous flower and ornamental plant growing area, Ms. Thanh used to buy small ornamental plants to transport to Nam Dinh city to sell on the streets, but for the past 6 years she has stopped at the tree market on Cot Co street (Nam Dinh city). From 8 am every day, after collecting goods from some gardeners in Vi Khe ornamental plant craft village, Nam Dien commune (Nam Truc), she transports the plants to her small stall to display and take the time to care for, trim and shape the new pots. With an area of only about 15m2, her stall has many types of ornamental plants, from perennial plants to small, pretty seasonal flower baskets. With a variety of flowers and ornamental plants, it is not difficult for customers to choose a satisfactory item at a reasonable price. Ms. Thanh said: “With many years of experience selling decorative bonsai trees, I am quite sensitive to the types of trees that follow social trends. In addition to buying trees from the garden to plant and shape, potting according to my own feelings and the needs of customers, recently through social networks I have also searched for new, unique and easy-to-grow varieties of trees to meet customer needs. Caring for bonsai trees requires knowledge, expertise and techniques to create beautiful, always vibrant pots. Therefore, I always learn to diversify my products, thereby bringing in a relatively stable source of income.”
The trend of playing miniature bonsai is becoming more and more popular, helping business people "live well" with their profession. Cot Co Street (Nam Dinh City) alone has more than a dozen stalls, attracting many people to buy. Miniature decorative bonsai are often divided into two main types: feng shui plants and small plants for the table. Plants such as: money tree, tiger tongue, pothos, peace lily, lucky, happy, succulent, cactus, bamboo lily, flamingo flower, foxtail pine, aquatic plants... are small in size, suitable for decorating desks, study corners, coffee shops, with prices ranging from 50 thousand to 200 thousand VND/pot. Plants used to hang or grow in pots on the balcony such as: petunias, periwinkle, black-eyed flowers, million bells hanging, five-color flowers, elegant... cost from 70 to 250 thousand VND/basket. Larger types with heights from 50cm to more than 1m to decorate corners of the house, office cost from 200 thousand to 1 million VND/pot, depending on the size and type of pot. These plants are not only beautiful but also have the meaning of bringing fortune, health, happiness to the owner, so they are chosen by many consumers. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, an office worker on Dong A Street (Nam Dinh City), said: “Office work with a rather small space often makes me feel suffocated because I am surrounded by only work-related paperwork. Therefore, I decided to buy a mini bonsai pot to put on my desk in the hope of creating an airy space, purifying the air, protecting my health, and helping me reduce “stress” every time I work hard.”
Vi Khe bonsai village, Nam Dien commune is a pioneer in developing bonsai in the province. Along with valuable trees, bonsai trees are attracting many people to participate in production and business, creating jobs and high income for many people. In the gardens, small, pretty trees with rough, ancient roots and beautiful, delicate flowers such as yellow apricot, white apricot, mai chieu thuy, linh sam, sam nui, cam thi... with mini sizes are grown quite a lot. In particular, the bonsai la han pine with beautiful shape, high disease resistance, long life span with the meaning of "Longevity like Nam Son" for the homeowner is chosen by many customers. In addition, there are bonsai trees chosen by customers according to feng shui such as cycads, la han pine, pine needles, willow, plastic pine, mai chieu thuy... suitable for the personality and work of each customer. Bonsai pots are also planted with decorative miniatures such as statues, rocks... to increase aesthetics with many different shapes, sizes and meanings.
In addition, other small-sized bonsai flower pots with decorative meanings such as mai chi, fake rose... are also quite popular with buyers with average prices ranging from 1 million VND to 3-4 million VND. Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, in Thuong 1 village, Nam Dien commune, has about 1 hectare with hundreds of mini bonsai trees with all kinds of sanh, si, da, barringtonia, supplying the market with about 2,000 trees each year. In addition to serving customers in the province, he also serves customers in provinces and cities such as: Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh and some provinces in the Central and Southern regions... Each year, Mr. Minh's mini bonsai garden earns billions of VND in revenue. He said that growing mini bonsai trees, in addition to choosing pure Vietnamese seeds due to their ability to adapt well to weather conditions, are less susceptible to pests and diseases and are easy to bend, the most difficult step is to edit and bend the tree shape. Because most of the young trees are very fragile, to create a bonsai with shape, soul and value requires the grower and pruner to have skillful hands, an aesthetic eye, passion and artistic quality. Along with that, the professional also needs to promptly grasp technology, consumer trends over time and age to advise and market to players with aesthetics and creativity. At the gardens, at this time, in addition to mini bonsai trees with shape, decorative ornamental plants, small aquatic plants are also grown by the people of Nam Dien commune to serve the needs of the people, especially at the end of the year.
Bonsai trees do not take up much space, do not require much effort to transport, and at the same time help households grow and trade bonsai trees reduce costs and labor.
