300 hectares of raw acacia are damaged by leaf-eating caterpillars

In Tan Ky district, the working group inspected the situation of caterpillars damaging acacia trees in Nghia Hanh commune.

In mid-April 2024, in this locality, acacia leaf-eating worms appeared, damaging more than 31 hectares of acacia. This year, acacia leaf-eating worms tend to spread to other adjacent areas. In addition to 250 hectares of acacia in the old area of Nguyen Trai hamlet, worms have appeared and damaged about 50 hectares of adjacent forest in Doi Cung hamlet; bringing the total area infected with worms in the commune to 300 hectares.

The district has sprayed 60 hectares of high density pests in Nguyen Trai hamlet, killing over 90% of the pests. In 50 hectares in Doi Cung hamlet alone, the pests are now in their fifth instar stage, pupating. It is predicted that in the near future, the next generation of pests will hatch, continuing to cause damage to this area and tending to spread to other adjacent areas.

The working group also inspected the agricultural production situation in Minh Chau commune, Dien Chau district. Currently, more than 8,500 hectares of spring rice in Dien Chau district are growing and developing favorably, and the early rice crop is starting to flower. Recently, some pests and diseases such as brown spot, grain rot, and leaf blight have appeared but are not significant.

However, a large area of rice in most varieties has white heads due to prolonged cold during the panicle initiation period, especially in early rice. Currently, the district is directing farmers to focus on care and provide enough water for the rice to flower and ripen; at the same time, spraying to prevent the area infected with brown spot disease and grain smut disease because the rice is currently blooming in cloudy weather with uneven sunlight.

Timely prevention, good protection of spring rice and raw materials

Up to now, Nghe An has 47,272/91,000 hectares of spring rice that have flowered. Through inspections in Tan Ky and Anh Son districts, many areas of rice have flowered but the grains are high and empty, the flowers do not bend; some areas of rice that have flowered have the phenomenon of flower head degeneration, common in many different varieties. In addition, leaf blast, neck blast, brown spot... have appeared and caused damage in some areas.

After inspecting the districts, comrade Nguyen Van De directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to assign staff to closely coordinate with localities to stay close to the fields, regularly investigate, detect and guide farmers to care for and prevent pests and diseases on crops promptly and effectively.

With rice, it is important to note that only prevent when necessary, do not overuse pesticides, especially in areas where rice does not bend or the rice heads degenerate due to the weather.

On acacia trees, to proactively detect, prevent and minimize damage caused by cutworms to raw acacia production, and at the same time prevent the worms from spreading widely, localities and specialized agencies, protective forest management boards, and forest owners must focus on monitoring, planning, and forecasting specifically for each area; promptly inspect, detect, and contain and prevent areas with high worm density that are likely to cause defoliation.
