Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long works with Kien Giang University

GD&TĐ - On the afternoon of November 14, in An Giang province, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long and his delegation visited and worked with Kien Giang University.

The proposed school is independently developed.

Accompanying the delegation were Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc; Director of the Department of Higher Education Nguyen Tien Thao. On the local side, there were representatives of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee and departments, branches and sectors of An Giang province.

Welcoming the delegation were Dr. Nguyen Huu Tho, Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of the School Council; Dr. Nguyen Tuan Khanh, former Party Committee Secretary, former Chairman of the School Council, former Principal of the School; Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Deputy Party Committee Secretary, Principal of the School.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long and his delegation visited the plastic recycling space under the Project "Prevention, reduction and recycling of fishing gear waste causing pollution in Vietnam's seas (Net-works)" and the experimental practice areas of the School.

At the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Principal of the school, briefly reported on the activities of Kien Giang University.

Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh said that with the orientation of an applied university, Kien Giang University has determined its strategic goal to train human resources to serve the development of marine economy and marine logistics services, associated with the practical needs of An Giang province, especially the Phu Quoc area.

Kien Giang University has an important position and role in training high-quality human resources, serving the economic and social development of An Giang province and the Mekong Delta region. In particular, the focus of training is to provide human resources to meet the province's goal of becoming a national marine economic center...

Also at the meeting, the school principal made recommendations. According to the roadmap of the Ministry of Home Affairs, in 2026 the school will be autonomous group 2, therefore, the school wishes to develop independently, providing high quality human resources for marine economic development.

Together with the province, establish the "Western Sea Economic Research and Application Institute"; invest in upgrading facilities and laboratories for applied research, implementing scientific programs/projects, innovation, economic development according to the planning orientation of the province, associated with cooperation between schools, businesses, and the State.

Investing in information technology infrastructure and digital transformation of education in the 2025 - 2030 period, in line with the National Digital Transformation Strategy, the policy of the Ministry of Education and Training and the province's Digital Transformation Project.

At the same time, prioritize budget allocation to support applied research programs/projects in the exploitation and sustainable conservation of marine resources, climate change adaptation, and preservation of national culture.

Finally, the School recommends that there should be preferential and specific policies for the fields of agriculture and environment to attract learners, because the demand for human resources in society is high but the choices of learners are very limited.

Focus on scientific research and innovation

Speaking at the working session, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long sent his best wishes to all teachers at Kien Giang University, on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20.

Highly appreciating the results achieved by the School, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long said that the School's focus on training in the fields of marine economics and marine logistics is in the right direction; at the same time, he congratulated the teachers and students of the School for achieving positive results in recent times.

The Deputy Prime Minister requested Kien Giang University to continue its efforts; closely follow the University's mission, vision and educational philosophy; and focus on more effectively implementing the assigned tasks.

The school needs to thoroughly grasp and effectively implement Resolution No. 71 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development and the Government's Action Program to implement Resolution No. 71.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that the University participate in the process of realizing policies and organizing implementation. The University needs to focus more on scientific research, innovation, how to have specific products and joint ventures, and partnerships with businesses to commercialize products.

At the same time, perfect the university governance model according to the policy of not organizing a school council and arranging for the Party Secretary to be the head of the university, associated with strengthening the spirit of solidarity, building a school that develops sustainably and has its own identity.

Develop a team of lecturers and managers with sufficient quantity, strong expertise, ethical standards and innovative spirit; seize development opportunities, focus on modernization and international integration.

Regarding the School's recommendations, the Deputy Prime Minister said that many recommendations are within the authority of the Ministry of Education and Training, An Giang province and the School, in which priority is given to investing in some necessary tasks.

The Deputy Prime Minister also requested the Ministry of Education and Training and the leaders of An Giang province to pay attention to meeting the requirements of the School; continue to bring the education career in general and of the province in particular to a new level, meeting increasingly higher requirements, developing the economy, society and ensuring national defense and security.

On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long presented gifts to the School and to students in difficult circumstances of the School.

Currently, Kien Giang University is training 25 majors and opens at least 2 new majors every year. Full-time enrollment in 2025 will reach 2,050 students, an average increase of 10% per year, bringing the total number of students in the whole school to over 9,000 students.

The school has 285 staff, including 41 PhDs and 1 Associate Professor (accounting for 22% of the total number of permanent lecturers), meeting the requirements of Circular 01/2024/TT-BGDDT. The school has nearly 40 graduate students being sent for training at home and abroad.
