According to SSI Research's business report, as of the end of the second quarter of 2023, Bamboo Airways' outstanding credit balance at Sacombank was VND 3,000 billion, accounting for 0.7% of total credit.
Although this loan is secured and Bamboo Airways still fulfills its debt repayment obligations on time, there are still some concerns about the airline's continued operations.
Specifically, Bamboo Airways recorded a huge accumulated loss of VND17,600 billion in 2022 compared to a loss of VND2,300 billion in 2021.
In addition, total assets at the end of 2022 decreased sharply by 33% compared to the beginning of the year to VND 18,000 billion, while equity was negative VND 836 billion although contributed capital was VND 18,500 billion. In 2022, Bamboo Airways' payables amounted to VND 18,800 billion, of which total debt was VND 10,600 billion.
SSI forecast financial indicators (Source: STB, SSI Research).
On August 19, the Prime Minister assigned relevant ministries and branches to support the restructuring of Bamboo Airways, according to which the State Bank is expected to support this enterprise in arranging capital by creating conditions for a suitable bank to participate as a shareholder.
However, SSI Research assessed this as a complicated case and potential credit risk for Sacombank if Bamboo Airways fails to restructure.
Regarding Sacombank's current outstanding debt, the analysis team said that overdue debt increased by 41.6% compared to the previous quarter, reaching VND13,500 billion, of which bad debt increased by 54%, to VND8,200 billion.
SSI believes that production, business activities and business households are the reasons for the increase in Sacombank's bad debt. Accordingly, the bad debt formation rate increased to 0.65% - the highest level in the past 3 years, while the bad debt coverage ratio decreased to 77% in the second quarter (compared to 103.8% in the first quarter). If asset quality continues to deteriorate, SSI forecasts that the restructured debt balance will increase in the second half of 2023 .
