Allergic rhinitis greatly affects the quality of life. Understanding the causes of this disease will help patients be more proactive in prevention. Early recognition of disease signs is the basis for doctors to provide the right treatment method, helping patients quickly recover their health.
Allergic rhinitis is explained as a condition in which the nose is irritated, not by viruses or bacteria, but by external factors such as dust, pollen, dust mites, pet hair, cigarette smoke, air pollution or when the weather changes, erratic sunshine and rain.
According to statistics from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, an estimated 10-30% of the world's population suffers from allergic rhinitis.
Allergic rhinitis is divided into four types: seasonal allergic rhinitis, perennial allergic rhinitis, occasional allergic rhinitis and occupational allergic rhinitis. In fact, it is not too dangerous and life-threatening for the patient. However, if not treated properly, the disease can recur frequently and progress severely. This not only hinders daily activities and reduces the quality of life, but also puts the patient at risk of complications such as acute and chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, etc.

Allergic rhinitis greatly affects quality of life.
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis
Symptoms occur in a short period of time or last for several days to a week and then disappear on their own. Although not particularly serious, prolonged symptoms will cause discomfort, fatigue, immune deficiency, affecting the daily life and study of patients, especially children and the elderly.
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis are divided into 2 groups:
Cyclical allergic rhinitis: usually appears at the beginning of the cold or hot season, causing the patient to feel itchy nose, sneezing continuously, red eyes, itchy eyes, watery eyes, runny nose, clear mucus. The patient may also have symptoms such as burning in the conjunctiva, palate, lethargy, fatigue, headache. These symptoms can last from a few days to a week and then go away and at that stage the disease recurs, sometimes lasting for many years causing degeneration, swelling of the nasal mucosa, nasal congestion, nasal turbinate hypertrophy...
Non-cyclic allergic rhinitis: is the most common condition with symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, runny nose when waking up in the morning, gradually decreasing during the day but recurring when exposed to dust or cold environment. Initially, the nasal discharge is clear but later it becomes thicker, flows in waves, more severe can cause continuous sneezing for many hours, causing secretions to stagnate in the throat so the patient often has to spit, damaging the nasal mucosa. In addition, the patient often has to breathe through the mouth due to nasal congestion, so it is very susceptible to pharyngitis and laryngitis.
Need to proactively prevent allergic rhinitis
Currently, allergic rhinitis cannot be cured and there is no specific treatment. The drugs used are all aimed at helping to relieve the symptoms of runny nose, stuffy nose, itchy nose, continuous sneezing, itchy throat, cough, headache, and impaired olfactory function. Therefore, it is necessary to proactively prevent the disease by limiting exposure to allergens, protecting the ears, nose, and throat and applying measures to enhance resistance to minimize the risk of more severe allergic rhinitis, specifically:
Strengthening the immune system: When the immune system is weak, the body is susceptible to allergies. Therefore, strengthening the immune system is one of the best ways to protect the body from allergic rhinitis.
Avoid allergens: Once you know what you are allergic to, try to avoid contact with it. Wearing a mask in areas where allergens are likely to appear is a good protection for the patient.
Protecting the ears, nose, and throat: The ears, nose, and throat are interconnected systems, so protecting the ears and throat well will help keep the nose healthy to reduce the risk of more severe allergic rhinitis.
