Currently, many non-public schools in Hanoi have announced their enrollment plans and the fees that need to be paid. This is the “deposit” or what parents call the reservation fee.
According to the regulations of most schools, this fee will not be refunded if the student does not apply for admission to the school. If the student enrolls, the school will deduct it from the expenses.
According to the reporter's records, the school's reservation fee currently ranges from over 1 million VND to 23 million VND.
Some private schools offer the lowest "deposit" currently such as: Phan Boi Chau High School (Ha Dong) 1.2 million VND/student, FPT High School (Thach That) 2 million VND...
Similarly, the admission fee of Doan Thi Diem High School is 2 million VND/student. The school requires students to complete the admission confirmation procedure before May 25 and will not refund this fee if the student does not confirm their admission.
In the 2024-2025 school year, Nguyen Tat Thanh High School (Thanh Xuan) will enroll 6 classes including: 3 high-quality classes and 3 basic classes. The school will start accepting applications from now until the quota set by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training is met with an admission fee of 3 million VND/student.
Meanwhile, some private schools offer quite high admission fees, over 10 million VND such as: Ly Thai To High School (Cau Giay) 11 million VND/student; Newton High School 12 million VND; Luong The Vinh High School 15 million VND; Hanoi Academy High School (Tay Ho) 20 million VND... Tuition fees at these schools are commonly between 7-20 million VND per month.
The school with the highest admission fee as of March 5 is Archimedes Academy High School (Dong Anh District) with 23 million VND/student. The school's monthly tuition is 8 million VND.
The "deposit" to reserve a spot for their child is not small, but many parents have spent a lot of money to help their children secure a reserve spot if they do not pass the 10th grade public school entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year.
Mr. Nguyen Duy Linh, a parent of a student in grade 9H, Trung Phung Secondary School (Dong Da) said that while waiting for Hanoi City to finalize the 10th grade entrance exam plan, his family proactively sought out admission information from some famous private schools in the city and decided to register their child for a school with a deposit fee of 5 million VND.
Mr. Linh said: “Even if my child passes the public school entrance exam and does not enroll in a private school, it will cost a few million, but my child will have less pressure from exams, and my family does not regret it. Now both my child and my wife are less worried.”
Booking a place in a private school for their children is being chosen by most parents as a safe solution, helping to reduce psychological pressure for their children.
Ms. Nguyen Hoai Phuong (Tay Ho district) just transferred nearly 7 million VND deposit for her child to enter a private school and said: "The pressure to enter the 10th grade public school is increasing day by day. Therefore, I am willing to spend a few million to make parents and children feel secure."
Private school deposit fees have been controversial for many years. Many people have expressed concern about the high “deposits” that schools charge. Parents competing to pay deposit fees contributes to the schools’ economy .
According to statistics, the city's 10th grade entrance exam in 2024 increased by 5,000 students compared to 2023. The pressure is increasing, while, up to this point, Hanoi City has not yet finalized the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi will apply the entrance exam method, including 3 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language.
The fourth subject, if any, will be announced in March 2024. The fourth subject will be selected by random drawing from among the subjects in the current secondary education program of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Currently, parents, students and teachers in Hanoi all expressed their hope that the city will soon finalize the number of exam subjects for 3 subjects: Math, Literature, Foreign Language to reduce pressure on students.
In the 2024-2025 school year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requires private high schools in the city to proactively develop enrollment plans.
The Department requires schools to promote the application of information technology in organizing 10th grade enrollment. Accordingly, public and private high schools in the city must develop plans and organize online enrollment, no longer maintaining both in-person and online forms in parallel as in previous school years.
This is a new solution of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training in the 2024-2025 school year admission period compared to previous school years to ensure transparency, fairness, and objectivity in admission, while contributing to solving the phenomenon of parents lining up from midnight to submit admission applications.
