The Premier League has experienced the most VAR-related disruptions in Europe.

VAR continues to be the focus of controversy in the Premier League after a new study revealed that England's top league is experiencing the most disruptions in Europe due to video assistant referee technology.

According to data compiled by Snickers in collaboration with Opta , Premier League fans have to wait a total of 1,126 minutes each season for VAR to make a decision. This is equivalent to nearly 19 hours or almost 12 complete football matches.

Interrupted play accounts for nearly a third of the 38 matches each team plays in the Premier League each season. This is also the highest rate among Europe's top leagues.

La Liga ranks second with 1,086 minutes spent waiting for VAR. Serie A recorded 823 minutes, while the Bundesliga only reached 604 minutes during the statistical period from 2017 to 2025.

Although data shows that each VAR check lasts an average of only 58.3 seconds, a survey of 1,600 fans reflects a completely different sentiment. As many as 23% of respondents believe that VAR often takes more than 90 seconds to make a decision.

Arsenal are the team most affected by VAR in Europe, with 78 incidents and a total of 80 minutes of disruption since the technology was introduced. West Ham are next with 68 incidents, while Brighton have 60.

Notably, 7 out of the 10 clubs most affected by VAR in Europe are from the Premier League.

OnePoll 's survey also revealed that 36% of fans believe VAR makes the football viewing experience less engaging. Meanwhile, 37% think the technology makes the game too slow, and 18% admitted to having argued with friends or family about VAR decisions.

The latest controversy arose in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, when Matheus Cunha's goal was allowed despite Bryan Mbeumo's handball in the preceding play.
