There are no fairy tales for Dunkerque. |
Early morning of April 2 ( Hanoi time), in the semi-final of the French Cup, the defending champion Paris Saint-Germain almost had to suffer defeat against the team ranked 5th in Ligue 2. Dunkerque reached the semi-finals of the French Cup for the first time in 96 years, and dreamed of one of the biggest shocks in the history of the tournament when they led PSG 2-0 after only 27 minutes.
Dunkerque had eliminated three Ligue 1 sides en route to the semi-finals. They opened the scoring in the seventh minute from a free kick from the left wing, with Vincent Sasso finishing with a powerful finish. Dunkerque doubled their lead in the first half, with Saudi Arabian midfielder Muhanad Al-Saad scoring.
Dunkerque fans, who had travelled a long distance from their hometown to Lille to watch the match, as the club's home ground was not up to standard, could hardly believe what was happening before their eyes.
However, PSG started their comeback just before half-time when Achraf Hakimi set up Dembele for a decisive strike to reduce the deficit to 1-2. They equalised just three minutes into the second half, with Marquinhos heading in from a Dembele cross following a quick corner.
Dunkerque were left fuming, believing the referee had wrongly awarded the corner that led to the goal. Naatan Skytta almost put the second-tier side ahead again shortly afterwards, but they missed the chance and paid the price.

France's rising star Desire Doue continued to shine with a one-two with Bradley Barcola, before Doue finished to make it 3-2 in the 60th minute.
As Dunkerque pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Dembele took advantage of the opportunity to accelerate and seal a 4-2 victory for PSG in stoppage time.
Luis Enrique's side play the French Cup final next month and can dream of winning all three major trophies by the end of the season.
PSG will officially win Ligue 1 this weekend if they avoid defeat at home to Angers. PSG will then face Aston Villa next week in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
