Paris Saint-Germain reaffirmed their dominance in French football by defeating RC Lens 2-0 in the highlight match of the penultimate round of Ligue 1 on the morning of May 14th. |
Needing only a draw to secure the title early, PSG played proactively against their direct rivals in the 29th round of Ligue 1 on the morning of May 14th. The Parc des Princes side opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian star capitalized on an assist from Ousmane Dembele following a defensive error by Lens, calmly finishing past the opposing goalkeeper.
Lens created numerous dangerous opportunities in both halves but unfortunately missed them all. Strikers Wesley Saïd and Abdallah Sima were both thwarted by the excellent goalkeeping of Matvei Safonov.
As Lens pushed forward in search of an equalizer at the end of the match, PSG delivered the finishing blow. In injury time, young talent Ibrahim Mbaye's shot hit the crossbar and bounced into the net after an assist from Desire Doue, sealing a 2-0 victory for the capital club.
This is PSG's 14th Ligue 1 title in history and their fifth consecutive league victory. For manager Luis Enrique, this marks his third domestic title since taking over PSG in 2023.
"This was a very difficult match. Lens deserved more, but Safonov played brilliantly," Luis Enrique said after the game.
This season, PSG still have a chance to win the treble, having already won Ligue 1, the French Super Cup, and are preparing to face Arsenal FC in the Champions League final on May 30th in Budapest.
The last time PSG failed to win Ligue 1 was in the 2020/21 season, when LOSC Lille pulled off a major surprise.
