PVFCCo pioneers in reducing air pollution from vehicles

The Vietnam National Energy Industry Group (Petrovietnam) has just coordinated with the Petrovietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation (PVFCCo) to organize a workshop on “Reducing pollution from diesel-powered vehicle emissions: Current situation and solutions in the Southeast region”. The event attracted the participation of many experts, scientists, state management agencies and businesses.

Accompanying green transformation

At the workshop, delegates focused on assessing the current emissions from diesel vehicles, one of the largest sources of PM2.5, NOx and SOx emissions. Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Minh Thanh said that the Southeast region has the largest density of freight and inter-provincial vehicles in the country and is under heavy pressure from traffic emissions.

Experts also said that air pollution in large cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is still complicated, sometimes reaching bad levels, directly affecting public health. In addition to traffic, people's and businesses' awareness of environmental protection is still limited; littering, burning agricultural by-products, and construction that does not meet environmental standards still occur.

According to Petrovietnam Deputy General Director Le Xuan Huyen, with its key role in the national energy and chemical industry, Petrovietnam identifies the task of accompanying the green transformation of the economy as a continuous responsibility. The Group focuses on technological innovation, developing clean and environmentally friendly products, including a group of solutions to reduce NOx emissions - a toxic gas from diesel engines that negatively impacts health and the urban environment. Among them, DEF - Phu My Xanh product is considered environmentally friendly.

Petrovietnam is committed to continuing to research and expand product lines that meet international standards, supporting localities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region in controlling air pollution and improving people's quality of life, towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

DEF solutions and SCR technology

Also at the workshop, delegates spent a lot of time discussing modern exhaust gas treatment technology, notably the SCR system combined with DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a solution that is being widely applied in countries with strict emission standards such as Europe, the US, Japan, etc. Delegates also proposed that there should be a support policy for older diesel vehicles to install additional suitable equipment, thereby using DEF and reducing emissions to meet standards. Expanding the use of DEF will contribute to improving urban air quality, protecting public health and improving vehicle operating efficiency.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PetroVietnam Chemicals and Fertilizer Joint Stock Corporation, shared that DEF - Phu My Xanh products are manufactured on modern production lines, strictly complying with ISO 22241 standards on content and purity, and achieving SGS international quality certification. DEF Phu My Xanh was officially launched by PVFCCo - Phu My in June 2025. In order to quickly bring the product to users, also in June, PVFCCo - Phu My signed a cooperation agreement with Vietnam Oil Corporation (PV Oil) to distribute DEF Phu My Xanh products at PV Oil's gas station system nationwide.

DEF is a mixture of pure urea and distilled water, which acts as a catalyst to convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor – completely harmless to the environment. When injected into the SCR system, DEF can help reduce NOx emissions by up to 90%, while optimizing operating performance and reducing fuel consumption.
