Mass fruit fall, "capital" of Dien grapefruit worries about Tet crop loss

(Baohatinh.vn) - Due to the impact of the weather, many areas of Dien grapefruit in Duc Tho commune (Ha Tinh) have fallen and been damaged; the purchase price is only 5,000 - 7,000 VND/fruit, causing losses for gardeners.

Mr. Chu Huy Hoang's family (Tram Bang village, Duc Tho commune) has more than 100 Dien grapefruit trees. In previous years, from the 10th lunar month, Mr. Hoang started to take care of and nurture the fruit for the Tet crop, but this year, due to the impact of prolonged rain and floods, more than 50% of the fruit yield fell and was damaged, causing great damage to the family.

Mr. Chu Huy Hoang has more than 100 Dien grapefruit trees, but due to the large amount of fruit falling, now only less than 50% of the yield remains.

Mr. Hoang shared: “The continuous heavy rain that lasted for a whole month has made the tree’s ability to absorb nutrients and nourish the fruit poor; at the same time, the humidity of the environment also created conditions for many types of fungi to develop, damaging the fruit. Currently, the grapefruit has begun to ripen and can be harvested, but more than 50% of the output has fallen, the rest is still at risk of continuing to be damaged, making it difficult to maintain the supply for Tet.”

According to Mr. Hoang, the prolonged storms not only affect the quantity, but also reduce the quality of the fruit; the fruit is uneven in size; the grapefruit segments are dry, fibrous, and not juicy; therefore, the purchase price is only 5,000 - 7,000 VND/fruit (last year it was 10,000 - 15,000 VND/fruit), causing people's income to decrease even more. "Every year, my 100 grapefruit trees can supply the market with nearly 10,000 fruits, however, this year it is expected to only have about 3,000 - 4,000 fruits. My family is also trying to "save" the remaining fruits on the tree, hoping that by the time of Tet we can sell them for a higher price" - Mr. Hoang said.

Mr. Hoang focused on weeding and keeping the ground dry, hoping to "salvage" the remaining grapefruit.

Tram Bang village is considered the “capital” of Dien grapefruit growing in Duc Tho with 111/124 households growing grapefruit. On average, each household has about 80 - 100 trees.

Mr. Nguyen An Ninh - Secretary of Tram Bang village Party Cell said: "Due to the impact of the weather, 100% of the grapefruit growing area in the area has lost 50 - 60% of its yield, the purchase price is low, at times only reaching 5,000 VND/fruit. Currently, some gardeners still maintain a yield of 40 - 50% to serve the Tet market. Therefore, we also actively encourage people to take care of and weed; regularly check the ripeness of the fruit, prune diseased fruit to have a supply at the end of the year, thereby increasing income".

Duc Tho commune officials encourage people to grow Dien grapefruit in the locality.

In Tan Tien village (Duc Tho commune), many households are also facing the situation of Dien grapefruit falling a lot due to the impact of the weather. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Linh said: “With 60 grapefruit trees for harvest, if the weather and prices are favorable, my family can earn from 50 to 60 million VND per crop. However, this year the extreme weather and prolonged rain have caused a sharp decrease in output. Currently, the purchase price is low, so I still prioritize keeping the remaining fruit to sell on the occasion of Lunar New Year, hoping to get a higher price.”

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Duc Tho commune, after the merger, the unit has about 20 hectares of Dien grapefruit, concentrated in Tram Bang and Tan Tien villages... Over the years, with the advantage of consistent quality and characteristic sweet aroma, Dien grapefruit has been recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards. This year, due to the impact of natural disasters, the grapefruit output supplied to the market has decreased significantly.

Dien grapefruit is currently starting to be harvested from now until Lunar New Year, but low purchase prices have caused people to fall into a situation of "bad harvest, low price".

Nguyen Thi Thanh Tieu, President of the Farmers' Association of Duc Tho Commune, said: "Although it is a crop suitable for the local soil and land conditions; this year, prolonged rain and floods have significantly affected the yield and quality of Dien grapefruit. Preliminary statistics show that about 40-50% of the quantity, or about 300,000 fruits, have fallen or been damaged.

At this time, Dien grapefruit has begun to be harvested and is expected to last until the Lunar New Year. Therefore, local authorities and farmers' associations are also coordinating with specialized agencies to guide people on appropriate care techniques, trying to "preserve" the remaining fruits, at the same time, taking measures to minimize the impact of weather and natural disaster risks; aiming to maintain the brand value of Dien grapefruit for the coming seasons."
