The possibility of Germany withdrawing from the World Cup is no longer just a rumor. |
The United States plays a central role in hosting the majority of matches in the 2026 World Cup, including the final and all of the semi-finals and quarter-finals. However, recent developments related to the Greenland issue have made the atmosphere surrounding the biggest football event on the planet more complicated.
Speaking to the German press, DFB Vice President Oke Gottlich said it was time for the football community to seriously discuss the possibility of taking strong action, even considering withdrawing from the tournament. According to him, what is happening now raises serious questions about the values that top-level sport always strives for.
"Personally, I wonder when we should start talking concretely about the possibility of boycotting the 2026 World Cup. For me, that time has come," Gottlich emphasized, citing the historical precedent of boycotted Olympic Games in the 1980s to show that sport cannot remain completely unaffected by major global changes.
Not only Germany, but several other European football federations have also voiced their concerns, although there is no consensus. The Netherlands said it is closely monitoring developments and may withdraw from the World Cup if necessary, while France affirmed that it does not support a boycott.
Amidst ongoing debates, the possibility of Germany appearing at the World Cup is becoming a big question mark.
