The Israeli military says it mistakenly killed three hostages after soldiers mistakenly identified them as a threat during the war in the Gaza Strip.
According to Reuters, an Israeli military spokesman said that the Israeli army mistakenly killed three hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza, including Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka and Alon Shamriz, during fighting with Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli army expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed to have "full transparency" in the investigation into the incident.
The Forum for Families of Hostage and Missing Persons, representing the families of the hostages, also expressed condolences and confirmed the identities of the three hostages who died.
The revelation of the hostage killings comes as the US hints at a disagreement with Israel over scaling back the war in Gaza, which is now the subject of “intensive discussions” between the US and its allies, the US National Security Adviser said.
Fierce ground fighting has spread this month across the length of the Gaza Strip, with aid groups warning of a humanitarian disaster. Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden said Israel was at risk of losing international support because of “indiscriminate” air strikes that kill civilians.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan visited Israel on December 14 and 15. US officials said the trip was intended to send a message to Israel to scale back its large-scale military campaign and shift to more targeted operations against Hamas leaders.
