Although the number of male athletes is not much, there are retraining departments, new training departments and experimental departments, but it can be seen that the Ha Nam Sports Training Center has a long-term direction. Knowing how to get around the "narrow gaps" when training female athletes, but to integrate, male athletes are very much needed. One of the new directions of the center is that the selection of athletes in general and male athletes in particular is not within the province but expanded nationwide.
After the province was re-established in 1997, the Department of Physical Education and Sports was established, and the work of selecting athletes was put forward. With a low starting point, the viewpoint of selecting female athletes and choosing to practice sports that other provinces were less interested in or did not practice was put forward. In 1999, women's football was formed, followed by wrestling, volleyball and swimming with over 90% of athletes being female.
With the young formation, to establish a name, choosing female athletes was the optimal method at that time. Because of the gender characteristics of female athletes developing earlier than male athletes, the training and competition time was also earlier than that of male athletes. A female athlete only needs 3-5 years of training to be able to compete with high achievements, while for male athletes, the time takes from 7-8 years. Later, other sports were formed, such as athletics, Canoeing, the concept of only selecting female athletes was maintained. There were times when Ha Nam's high-achievement athletes only had 1-2 male athletes in the Swimming and Diving Department.
With this choice, Ha Nam has achieved early results. The sports that have won the most medals and have the most national athletes of Ha Nam are women's football, wrestling and athletics. And after 25 years of high-performance competitions, the Sports Training and Competition Center (DTTT) of Ha Nam province (Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism ) has joined Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to become the 3 national women's football training centers. The wrestling and athletics departments have many athletes competing in Asian and SEA Games tournaments with outstanding results.
With those successes and marks, along with the attention to facilities, the selection of male athletes is also of interest. Female athletes have the advantage of achieving results earlier, but their peak competition period does not last long and their careers also end earlier. Although male athletes achieve results later, their peak period lasts longer, which means they compete longer than female athletes.
Therefore, in many disciplines, the Sports Training Center has begun to recruit additional male athletes. Up to this point, the Center has 22 male athletes in the following disciplines: diving, wrestling, taekwondo, tennis and athletics. Currently, the Wrestling - Jujitsu Department has the largest number of male athletes, 12 athletes. The male athletes are all in the youth team, practicing a variety of disciplines from freestyle wrestling, ethnic wrestling to traditional wrestling and Jujitsu. After 4 years of training, in early 2023, the athletes will be professionally trained and will soon have achievements.
Participating in the 2023 National Ethnic Wrestling Championship and the 2023 National Ethnic and Classical Wrestling Youth Group Championships that just took place, the male athletes of the Wrestling - Jujitsu Department won 2 Silver Medals (HCB) and 4 Bronze Medals (HCĐ). At the 2nd National "Freestyle Wrestling - Cup 15/5" in 2023 hosted by Ha Nam, the male athletes won 2 Gold Medals (HCV), contributing to the success of winning the Cup, First Prize Flag and Certificate of Merit from the Central Team Council of Ha Nam Delegation.
In swimming and diving, in 2022, after selecting male athletes for training at the youth level, due to the actual conditions of facilities and the selection process facing many difficulties, there is currently 1 male athlete. This is also the only sport that has maintained training of male athletes, in which the male athlete with the most achievements is Nguyen Xuan Thien, currently a coach and athlete of the Provincial Sports Training Center.
There is also 1 male athlete in tennis. This is a special sport of the Sports Training Center when athletes practice as a boarding student (they can return home with their families in the evening). It is also the sport with the youngest age group of athletes in the center, they are only 9-10 years old. However, with the expanded youth tournaments, they have achieved remarkable achievements. Athletics is also a sport that returns to training male athletes. In 2021, the center selected 6 athletes for this sport. Currently, the athletes are in the training and development stage well. Taekwodo is a new sport of the center, established in 2020 with 8 athletes, including 4 male athletes. The best achievement of the male athletes is the bronze medal at the 2022 Youth Taekwodo Tournament.
However, for training in general and competition in particular as well as to increase male athletes, the center's facilities need to be further renovated to meet the requirements. Along with that, there needs to be more policies to hire experts and good coaches to further improve the quality and achievements of Ha Nam sports.
