In the report, the province emphasized the urgency of the incident and requested the Government to consider providing support for the implementation of reinforcement work to ensure long-term safety for the people and critical infrastructure.
According to reports, on November 16-17, 2025, exceptionally heavy rainfall caused a serious landslide behind houses along Hung Vuong Street, Hamlet 3A, Khe Sanh Commune. The landslide extended approximately 170 meters, with the embankment collapsing 15 meters deep and 30 meters wide, affecting an area of over 5,000 square meters. The eroded soil penetrated nearly 1 meter into the house foundations, severely damaging two houses and partially affecting ten others; all 12 households were forced to evacuate urgently to safe locations.
Immediately after the incident occurred, the leaders of Quang Tri province organized three working groups, led by the Chairman and Vice-Chairmen of the Provincial People's Committee, to directly go to the scene to direct the response. The provincial and Khe Sanh commune authorities immediately cordoned off the dangerous area, erected warning signs, and relocated residents to safe places. However, due to the complex terrain, difficult access to the landslide area, and potential safety risks during the exploration and survey process, the survey and design progress was slower than required.
The province affirmed that, to ensure long-term safety, the repair of houses for affected households can only be implemented after the completion of research on optimal and safe solutions to address the landslide in the stream bed. On November 25, 2025, the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee declared a state of emergency regarding natural disasters in the landslide area; simultaneously, it directed the development of a response plan and preparation for the implementation of emergency projects.
To date, 10 households have been provided with stable temporary housing at the former headquarters of the Labor Union and the Justice Department of Huong Hoa district; one household is temporarily staying with relatives, and one household has arranged their own accommodation. Quang Tri province has provided 5 million VND per household to the two most severely affected households and 2 million VND per household to the remaining 10; it has also mobilized forces to assist in clearing the site and transporting people's belongings. To implement the next steps, the province has temporarily allocated 10 billion VND from its contingency fund to survey, develop plans, and invest in long-term landslide prevention projects.
The Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee stated that this is only a temporary resource; to address the issue thoroughly, the province requests the Prime Minister to consider providing financial support and allowing the application of a special mechanism to implement the project urgently. Quang Tri commits to striving to complete the repair of houses for affected households before the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, while continuing to support the stabilization of their lives throughout the recovery process.
According to the Chairwoman of the Khe Sanh Commune People's Committee, Thai Thi Nga, all 12 households wish to receive support to repair their houses on their old land, as this is a place they have lived in for a long time and is convenient for living, production, and business. However, to ensure safety, the area must have its embankment reinforced with reinforced concrete to prevent landslides and avoid the risk of further houses being swept away. The option of relocating to a new resettlement area is considered costly and time-consuming, especially the land clearance process.
