Quang Tri's desire to be included in the global UNESCO heritage map is completely justified.

That is the view of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc, Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO at an online meeting with the People's Committee of Quang Tri province and experts to consult on selecting a cultural heritage of the province to include in the UNESCO nomination list and build the title of City for Peace this afternoon, July 16. At the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nam provided general information about the typical values of the special national relic of Vinh Moc Tunnels and Vinh Linh tunnel village system (Vinh Linh district); National relic of Gio An ancient water exploitation works system (Gio Linh district); the bases for nominating Vinh Moc Tunnels and Vinh Linh tunnel village system, Gio An ancient water exploitation works system to the list of world cultural heritages. On that basis, the Provincial People's Committee proposed the National Commission for UNESCO to consider and select 1 cultural heritage of the province to include in the UNESCO nomination list. At the same time, it proposed to consult for Quang Tri to build the title of City for Peace, proposing UNESCO recognition.

At the meeting, delegates highly appreciated Quang Tri’s successful organization of the recent Festival for Peace, emphasizing that the spirit of the festival has the significance of raising the international level of the message for peace. From that perspective, delegates said that promoting the title of City for Peace is a very suitable direction, but it must follow UNESCO’s procedures and the country must submit it to the council for approval, or propose a new award.

After listening to the opinions of the delegates, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc emphasized that Quang Tri province's desire to put the locality on the global UNESCO heritage map is completely justified. The province has potential but lacks effective methods, and needs to set short-term and long-term goals for implementation.

According to Deputy Minister Ha Kim Ngoc, the most feasible minimum plan in the immediate future is to build a Global Learning City, integrating the Festival for Peace into it so that it can be achieved within reach. The high-level plan is to build a City for Peace, raising the national and international level, creating a spread of the festival so that by 2026 it will have a stronger explosion, and be included in the UNESCO heritage map.

With experience in heritage, Deputy Minister Ha Kim Ngoc realized that in order to attract tourists to Quang Tri, it is necessary to build tangible heritage, so in the long term, priority should be given to building intangible heritage. In particular, in the Deputy Minister's personal opinion, priority should be given to building the system of ancient Gio An water exploitation works.

The Deputy Minister asked experts to help the province plan a long-term strategy, paying attention to promoting Quang Tri on social media platforms. At the same time, he emphasized that in the upcoming meeting with the World Heritage Committee, he would introduce the contents proposed by the province, and asked the province to coordinate to develop a specific plan.
